Seventh-grade Cubs tally more wins

The Powell Middle School boys’ seventh-grade basketball team has continued its winning streak in recent weeks.

On Feb. 8, the “A” and “B” teams traveled to Thermopolis to face Worland and Thermopolis.

The “A” team outscored Thermopolis 22-7 in the first half and went on to win 48-23. Keona Wisniewski scored nine points, Dusty Carter eight and Kash Brazelton seven.

Powell’s “B” team beat Thermopolis 34-25. Dawson Griffin and Kaiden Jones both finished the game with eight points and Brazelton scored seven, all in the first quarter.

Against Worland, Powell’s “A” team found itself trailing 35-33 after three quarters, but rallied to hold Worland scoreless in the fourth quarter to secure a big, 43-35 conference win.

Brazelton “provided a big spark off the bench,” said coach Tracy McArthur, leading the Cubs with 11 points. Alex Jordan added nine points and Zane Graft finished with eight. The “A” team is now 9-1, going undefeated since an opening loss to Cody.

The “B” team — now 10-0 on the year — beat Worland 27-25. Trey Scott finished with seven points to lead the team while Griffin had six.

 

Jan. 27 — Powell vs. Rocky

Powell’s “A” team beat Rocky Mountain 39-16.

“The Cubs ran the floor well and looked to share the ball,” coach McArthur said. Wisniewski led all scorers with 14 points, while Dusty Carter added eight and Graft seven.

Powell’s “B” team won 42-13. Griffin had 14 points and Mitchel Wainscott added 10 points.

The Cubs also won an additional “B” game, escaping with a 16-14 win. Jones led this effort with six points while Jermaine Broussard added five points.

 

Jan. 30 — Powell vs. Laurel

The “A” team took a hard-fought win over Laurel, Montana, 33-17. Wisneiwski led all scorers with 12 points. Jordan and Dusty Carter both added six points to help secure the win.

The “B” team won 45-13. Brazelton led all scorers with 10 points, while Hancock and Torres each added six.

 

Feb. 1 — Powell at Worland 

Powell faced off against Worland and Thermopolis in a Feb. 1 visit to Worland.

The “A” team beat Thermopolis 41-8. Wisniewski scored 12 points, while Dusty Carter had 11 and Graft added eight.

The “B” team beat Thermopolis 29-20. After trailing by two at the end of the third quarter, “the Cubs played a great final quarter to outscore Thermopolis 15-4 to secure the win,” coach McArthur said.

McKale Foley led with eight points and Hancock added seven.

Against Worland, the “A” team got off to a slim 7-6 halftime lead, then went on to win 27-14. Dusty Carter had a season-best 17 points while Jordan added six.

The “B” team beat Worland 32-12. Griffin finished with 10 points while Foley and Jones added six points each.

 

Feb. 4 — Powell at Lovell

The Cubs’ “A” team led Lovell 18-9 at halftime and won 35-28. Jordan led Powell with 14 points, while Dusty Carter and Graft both chipped in five.

Powell’s “B” team won 54-27. Three Cubs reached double figures: Jaxon Hancock with 12 points, Brenton Henke with 11 and Juan Torres added 10.

Powell lost the third game of the evening in an additional “B” game, 22-19. Max Reynolds led the Cubs with eight points while Truett Carter added six.
