Eighth graders take second place

With a strong all-around team performance, the Powell Middle School seventh grade boys’ track and field team won the Yellowstone Conference title by nearly 50 points while the eighth grade boys came up just short in a second place finish in Worland on Saturday.

Three first place finishes led a true team effort for the Cubs, as Kaile Lasson won the 400 meters in 1 minute, .25 seconds, Ethan Kennedy won the 1600 meters in 5:30.54 and Jake Wiliams won the pole vault clearing 8 feet.

A number of second place finishes helped the Cub cause, as Danen Oram was second in the 100 meter dash (13.03) and 200 meters (26.71), Manti Jeide placed second in the long jump (14-1 1/4) and Lasson was second in the shot put (31-1 1/2).

Oram added a third place finish in the 400 meters (1:01.17) and fifth place finish in the high jump (4-7); Keaton Keller took fourth in the 800 meters (2:37.39); Lasson was fourth in the 200 meter hurdles (32.25); Josiah Davis-Crevison placed fourth in the long jump (13-1 1/2); Kennedy placed fifth in the 800 meters (2:38.44); Jeide took fifth in the 100 meter hurdles (18.59) and 200 meter hurdles (32.58) while Kayson Brown took fifth in the shot put (27-11).

As a team the seventh grade Cubs earned 153 points, 49.5 points ahead of second place Worland.

Carter Gambill was the lone winner for the eighth grade boys’ team, as he won the 400 meters in 54.85 seconds, nearly five seconds ahead of second place.

Despite the lone victory, the Cubs added several second place finishes, including Gambill in the high jump (5-4); Tucker McDonald in the pole vault (9-6) and Dawson Engesser in the shot put (37-9).

Gambill also added a third place finish in the 200 meters (25.52); Ryder DeBoer took third in the 800 meters (2:24.74) and 1600 meters (5:15.08); Tyler Cole took third in the 200 meter hurdles (31.08) and triple jump (35-6 1/2); Kendall Matthews was third in the pole vault (8-6) and fifth in the 800 meters (2:32.28); McDonald placed fourth 100 meter hurdles (17.91) and fifth in the 200 meter hurdles (31.73); Garrett Jolley took fifth in the 100 meter hurdles (18.66); Kayde Northrup placed fifth in the shot put (35-3 1/2) while Engesser was fifth in the discus (114).

As a team the Cubs took second with 131 points, just seven behind Worland and one ahead of Riverton in third.
