Senior citizen allegedly caught with marijuana

Powell police arrested a 69-year-old woman at a senior living facility last week after reportedly finding multiple packages of marijuana in her apartment.

Randi K. Durrans spent parts of four days in jail on a misdemeanor count of possessing a controlled substance before being released from custody to await further proceedings. She has pleaded not guilty to the allegation.

Charging documents say Durrans lives at the Rocky Mountain Manor, and on the morning of April 28, staff contacted police with suspicions that she was smoking marijuana.

Responding Officer Carson Olsen said he smelled the substance as soon as he walked into the manor’s lobby and was told that Durrans had just left.

In an affidavit, Olsen said he spent nearly a half-hour looking for her vehicle and ultimately found her returning to the manor.

Olsen said he and another officer then followed Durrans to her room, where they smelled “a very strong odor of marijuana.” Durrans admitted to having the drug, the officer wrote, and ultimately turned over several packages and containers of apparent marijuana; some labeled “sweet grass” and “Fat Hippie” appeared to have come from a dispensary.

“Based on my training and experience it is common for people to travel to Montana to legally purchase marijuana and bring it back to Wyoming,” Olsen wrote. “Durran[s] freely stated she goes to Montana and buys approximately two months’ worth at a time.”

Durrans was taken into custody and made her first appearance in Park County Circuit Court on May 1. Circuit Court Judge Joey Darrah appointed a public defender to represent Durrans and released her on her own recognizance ahead of a Sept. 24 trial date.
