Runstagram : Powell High School’s girls’ team bring humor to the sport

If you’re scrolling through Instagram and you see Powell High School’s girls cross country and track stars catching and eating flaming hot no-bake cookies or participating in the latest TikTok trends you’ve likely found rnrgirlclub — if you notice the videos have gathered hundreds if not thousands of likes, you’ve definitely found it.

The Instagram account, which has pages upon pages of trendy shorts as well as videos of races from meets, started as a way for junior Powell High runner Ashlee Jacobsen’s older sister Kenna to rediscover her excitement for running, the younger Jacobsen explained with a smile.

“Basically it started out as a private account for Kenna to be able to get excited about running again, just like, make silly little posts, silly little videos,” she said.

Kenna would post with her sister Megan and other teammates before eventually deciding to make the account public.

The first video posted in May 21, 2022, captioned “State Champ Handshake,” shows an overjoyed Megan, who finished All State, and Kenna colliding in slow motion, state medals clanging around their necks.

“They got rid of some of the funnier stuff,” Ashlee said with a laugh, “We’ve just been making videos … and showing just like life, running, so it went through them and now I have it, now that Kenna is gone.”

Ashlee uploads to the account with the help of fellow runner Shelby Zickefoose who films the reels on TikTok before sending them to Ashlee to upload on Instagram. Their Aug. 21 video earned 28,000 views and over 1,000 likes.

“We’ve always joked, ‘Haha, like, we’re gonna go viral,’ but it’s always just been like a silly haha thing, we’ve never actually thought it would,” Ashlee said. “And over these past few videos that we’ve made, it’s continued to [gain] traction.”

The account also makes practice more fun. The girls don’t have a regular posting schedule but they often share video ideas with each other and look forward to what they want to shoot.

Students will come up in the hallways to talk about the account and its latest videos, she said, and some other teams, Cody for example, know Powell’s speedsters as the “runner girls.”

“All of our friends that we’ve made, a lot of them call us the runner girls … which is always fun,” Ashlee said.

Ashlee’s favorite video is one where she, Zickefoose and Karee Cooley catch hot nobake cookies as a spin on TikTok’s “Milkaholic” trend. That video gathered 11,000 views, 290 likes and 15 shares. In the trend, youth down large amounts of milk as “Sir, This Is Cut Throat Fashion,” by Her Words Kill plays in the background.

In particular, the line “Better pack your tears into a suitcase and run away with my heart,” sang over the top of a heavy, early aughts drum beat.

The three Powell girls opted to reference the no-bake cookies they devour at every cross country hangout at team member Melissa Merritt’s house over gallon jugs of milk.

“We always make no-bakes, and so we all say that we’re like, “No-Bakeaholics,” Ashlee said with a smirk. “So like that one I think is my favorite, because it was also really hot in our hand, it was like freshly off the stove … our hands, our hands were, like, burning.”

Their latest video, with 7,701 views, features the whole girls’ team as well as two of the three coaches, in a skit where the team is late due to the girls “throwing a fit” — they mean outfit, of course.
