Royals rally for win

Majors Field was the stage for a wild one Tuesday night in Powell Little League Majors action as the Royals (7-5-1) rallied from an early deficit and hung on late for a 13-11 win over the Cardinals.

The Cardinals (7-5) jumped ahead right off the bat, putting up five runs in the top of the first with Jaden Phister, Ryan Cordes, Dane Peterson, Jace Nordeen and Austin Graft all coming across.

A little ground was made up in the bottom of the first as Reece Bauer and Brandon Wentz each scored to make it a 5-2 game.

Phister and Cordes both reached and would come around to score in the second to again make it a five-run margin at 7-2, but the Royals evened it up with five runs in the bottom of the frame.

Hunter James, Bauer, Trey Stenerson, Wentz and Keaton Rowton would score to square things up at 7-7.

Royals starting pitcher Rowton then held the Cardinals scoreless in the top of the third and Wentz, Chloe Freeman, Bauer and Stenerson would score in the bottom half to put the ‘Blue Kid Group’ up 11-7.

The Clubbin’ Cards, however, would get those four runs back in the forms of Peterson, Nordeen, Graft and Jack Van Norman to again knot the score, this time at 11-11.

Ryan Cordes, pitching in relief for the Cardinals kept it tied by striking out the side in the bottom of the fourth, but Stenerson worked around a two-out walk in the top of the fifth to give the Royals a chance.

And they were able to eke out the difference makers in the bottom of the fifth.

Bauer led it off with a single through the left side and would move to second on a wild pitch.

With two outs, Rowton shot a line-drive single to center that took a cray hop that sent it all the way to the fence, allowing him to circle the bases and put the Royals up 13-11.

The Cardinals did threaten to get back into it when Phister ripped a double to left-center to start the top of the sixth.

But Stenerson was able to record the next three outs to secure the Royal win.

In Tuesday’s other game, the Giants came up on the wrong end of a 7-1 score at Lovell.

Action continues tonight (Thursday) as the Cardinals host the Otto Rattlers at 7 p.m., with the Royals traveling to Lovell for a 6 p.m. contest.
