Dick Thompson, a former Powell resident, died Jan. 24, 2012 in Yukon, Okla., surrounded by his loving family. He was 80.

Dick was born on May 10, 1931 in Thermopolis, the only child of Steven and Mildred (Haynes) Thompson. He graduated from Cody High School with the class of 1949. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Louise Petersen, in Billings on Aug. 18, 1950.

Dick loved to whistle and usually could be heard before he was seen. “Whistlin’” Dick was employed with the Dowell Division of Dowell Chemical for 28 years. His job led the family to live in many different places over the years including Worland, Powell, Vernal, Utah, Grand Junction and Thornton, Colo., where he retired in 1987.

After retirement, Dick and Mary traveled throughout the United States seeing new country, visiting and making new friends. His favorite places were the North Fork of the Shoshone River and Flaming Gorge area of Utah. In 2007 Dick and Mary moved to Yukon, Okla., to be closer to family. He became a big fan of the “Oklahoma City Thunder” basketball team and the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.

Dick is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary, five children, Larry of Vernal, Utah, Jeannette (Steve) Slatky of Yukon, Okla., Judy Thompson of Vernal, Utah, Jill Egnew of Grapevine, Texas and Jim (Deb) Thompson of Powell, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He will always be remembered for his sweet spirit and kind heart towards everyone he loved, met and worked with.

No services are planned at this time. The family requests that memorial donations be sent to “The Children’s Center,” 6800 NW 39th Expressway, Bethany, OK 73008.
