Rep. Laursen faces challenge from Powell businessman

Posted

With a little more than a week remaining in the filing period, a Republican primary election contest is already in the works in Powell’s House District 25.

Rep. Dan Laursen, who holds the seat, has filed for his fourth term in the State House of Representatives. He has a primary challenge from Chris Good, 48, owner of Quality Propane in Powell.  Good also has retail fireworks outlets in Powell, Lovell and Worland as well as other locations in the state.

The filing period to get on the ballot for August’s primary election runs through May 29.

Laursen, 60, is seeking re-election “to continue to be a conservative vote down there in the House.”

“There’s not that many, and we need that voice down there,” he added.

In the House, Laursen serves on the Agriculture and Revenue committees. He is vice chair of the Select Water Committee and serves as state chairman of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

For Good, it’s his first try for elective office. He said he is motivated to run because of his concern for the economic well-being of the state at a time “when natural resources are tanking.”

“We need alternative revenue sources” to offset declining valuations of coal, oil and gas, he said. “New ideas coming from the younger generation can help,” he added.

Good doesn’t describe himself by labels — either moderate or conservative. There’s too much of that already, he said.

“Everybody’s in their own bunkers. You have to be able to work with everybody,” he said. “You’ve got to get out of your bunker and make things work.”

A native of Lovell, he is a graduate of Lovell High School and attended Cheyenne Aero Tech. He has 25 years of experience in business.

The filing period for partisan and municipal offices closes on Friday, May 29.
