Interesting that on the editorial page 12-5-19 was a guest opinion on “Heeding the Revenue Warnings in Governor Gordon’s Budget” placed next to Pat Stuart’s column with her continuing assumption that our community is going to pay for and build a new library.
In the “Budget” column was yet another reference to the implementation of a state income tax because the state’s extravagant, opulent schools are a black hole sucking up our money. I’m assuming that implicit in Ms. Stuart’s push for a new library is another campaign to implement another county-wide 1 cent sales tax increase.
Rather than more taxes for expensive “pet projects” the proponents of a new Powell library might take a lesson from our county commissioners (who are considering selling off the Park County Complex) and sell off existing government land to pay for it. Remember that our county commissioners have already had to take money from savings to pay bills and this proposed library (proponents don’t know how much construction will cost us) will undoubtedly place additional unknown financial burdens on our county.
Gov. Gordon got it exactly right: stop government spending and cut costs. Live within our means.
The state and county budget issues should be sounding warning bells on spending.
