Dear editor:
I would like to remind homeowners of the filing deadline for the 2026 property tax exemption. The filing period started Oct. 1 and has been extended to March 1 by the Department of Revenue. Homeowners can receive a 25% property tax exemption off the first $1 million of fair market value. The requirements are for single-family residential structures and associated improved land. The owner must occupy the residence eight or more months per year. For homeowners to receive the 25% exemption they must complete the Wyoming Owner-Occupied Affidavit. Easy online at ptd.wyo.gov/OWNEROCC.
I recommend having your property tax statement handy to provide your parcel number. You can also make a visit to the County Assessor’s office at the County Courthouse.
There is also available a Long-Term Homeowners Exemption which gives 50% off assessed value of your primary residence and associated improved land up to 35 acres. The filing period started Oct. 1 and goes through May 26.
Requirements are that you qualified in 2025 and there have been no ownership or residency changes. Complete the Wyoming Long-Term Homeowners Affidavit with the County Assessor. A new applicant must be 65-plus years old, owner or spouse, have paid Wyoming property tax for 25-plus years, and occupy the residence eight or more months per year.
A surviving spouse of 2025 recipient may qualify. If you have any questions, please call the County Assessor’s office at 307-527-8650.
