Plaques for the Powell Wall of Honor have already arrived. Assuming that another $2,000 can be raised, the plan is to have the tribune to local veterans finished by Labor Day.

With fundraising coming along more slowly than hoped, the construction of the “Powell Wall of Honor” has been delayed.

The project, led by members of American Legion Hughes-Pittinger Post 26, aims to recognize every veteran who’s lived in the Powell area since 1919. When complete, the Wall of Honor will list the names of hundreds of more than 2,200 current or former members of the U.S. Armed Forces.

The deadline to submit names was Veterans Day 2019, and leaders had hoped to unveil the wall on Saturday, July 4.

However, that date has now been pushed back to Labor Day, Sept. 7, as “the result of an inability to raise the necessary funds to complete construction,” project leaders say.

Around $2,000 is still needed for the wall’s framework.

“The post has several fundraising events scheduled and donations are always welcome and would be most appreciated,” said the announcement from the Legion.
