Powell to host Little League district, state tournaments

Posted

Powell will be a baseball bastion next week as hordes of little league players will compete across three levels in two district tournaments and one state tournament.

The Little League Minors, Majors and Juniors will compete Wednesday through Saturday, with the Wyoming state tournament being the next step for the Minors and Majors, while the Juniors will move on to a regional tournament next month.

MINORS

The Little League Minors bracket will feature nine teams of 9- and 10-year-old players. The Powell All-Stars will be seeded sixth, and will battle Lander in their first game at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Homesteader Park. If Powell is victorious, it will go on to face either Cody, Riverton or Big Horn in the winners bracket at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. If Powell loses, they will face either Cody, Riverton or Big Horn in the consolation bracket at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday with a chance to play through and win the tournament. The tournament champion and consolation champion advance to state.

The other teams competing in the bracket are Bridger Valley, Green River, Kemmerer and Rock Springs.

MAJORS

The 11- and 12-year-old Powell All-Stars will be vying for a much bigger prize next week. The top two teams in the Majors district tournament will go on to the state tournament, and a successful performance there could lead to the regional tournament in San Bernardino, California, which serves as a qualifier for the Little League World Series.

Powell All-Stars coach Cory Ostermiller said he feels good about his team going into the tournament, but said a lack of familiarity with a majority of the other teams makes the tournament a crapshoot.

“It’s so hard to tell. It’s not like a legion program where you can talk to other coaches and get game film,” Ostermiller said. “You just kind of have to go out and play and see how you stack up.”

Powell is seeded sixth among the eight teams in the bracket, which include Big Horn, Bridger Valley, Cody, Green River, Lander, Riverton and Rock Springs. Powell opens tourney play with a 5 p.m. showdown against Bridger Valley on Wednesday at Homesteader Park. If Powell wins, it will advance to an 11 a.m. game against either Big Horn or Green River on Thursday. If Powell loses on Wednesday, they will have to fight through the losers bracket starting with a 5 p.m. contest against either Big Horn or Green River, also on Thursday. Like the Minors tournament, the Majors Tournament champion and consolation champion will move on to state.

JUNIORS

Four Juniors ballclubs will be battling for one spot in the regional tournament which takes place Aug. 5-12 in Vancouver, Washington.

Powell will begin its trek to a regional berth with a 7 p.m. showdown with Cody on Wednesday at the Babe Ruth Field. If Powell wins, it will either face Big Horn or Green River at 7 p.m. Thursday. The loser of Wednesday’s game falls to a must-win consolation game at 2 p.m. Thursday.
