Darrell Rood, sanitation superintendent for the City of Powell, worked his last day on May 11. He retired after nearly 29 years with the city. The city advertised the position for three weeks in April, and Sanitation Foreman Allen Griffin applied and was offered the job.
City Administrator Zack Thorington said Griffin, who has been with the city for 14 years, knows the department well.
Rood is looking forward to spending more time in the mountains and doing some travel, he said. He said there are parts of the job he’ll miss.
“The best part of my job is the array of jobs — collection, transfer station system, weed and pest and recycling. No two days the same,” Rood said.
Rood started with the city in June of 1992. He worked his way up to superintendent, taking over the position when Myron Heny retired. Thorington said Rood was instrumental in securing funding for the transfer station, which resolved conflicts over tipping fees with Park County, allowing Powell to utilize the Billings Landfill, where rates are cheaper.
“He has been a wonderful department head and has always kept the department running smoothly,” Thorington said. “He will be missed, but the city will be in good hands with new leadership that Darrell helped mold.”
Griffin is originally from Meeteetse and moved to Powell when he started with the city as a sanitation technician. He was promoted to foreman in 2014.
With Griffin moving into Rood’s former position, the city has one vacancy in the Sanitation Department.
