It was one last regular season tune-up Thursday at the Cody Trackstravaganza, with the Panther track and field team taking part in the three-team event with the host Broncs and Worland.
And even at this late stage of the season, along with strong finishes from the usual suspects, a new name or two popped up in the winning column.
The Powell boys would win their half of the meet, totaling 189.5 points, in a very heated battle as Cody took second with 181.5 and Worland third with 172.
The Lady Panthers would fall short of the Fillies, 224.5 to 181.5, while Worland was third at 102.
Among the new names that helped Powell along was Caitlyn Miner who edged teammate Gabri Lundburg by .01 of a second to win the 100-meter dash.
Miner timed in at 14.13 seconds to Lunburg’s 14.14, while Karlie McKenzie, Jaz Haney and Kourtney Rowland finished fourth, fifth and sixth for the Panthers.
Lundburg and McKenzie went fifth and seventh in the 200 and five Powell girls had scoring finishes in the 400.
Danna Hanks got the win with a time of 1:02.38, as Rachelle Cole was third at 1:07.69 and Lundburg, Rylie Ramsey and Shaylee Tharp ended up fifth, sixth and seventh.
Three more placings came in the 800 with Julia Kay O’Neill winning in 2:26.03, Teo Faulkner getting third in 2:44.33 and Dagne Stratton fourth at 2:50.83.
Faulkner then won the 1600 in 5:50.68 and three more Lady Panthers finished in the top four in the 100-meter hurdles.
Danna Hanks took the top spot in 16.85 seconds, Mollie Kissner was third (18.35) and Emily Sweet fourth (18.42).
Maddie Hanks would place third in a tight 300-hurdles heat, with her time of 53.81 seconds, less than one second off the winning time of 52.87 by Cody’s Eve Johnson.
Two Lady Panther relay teams competed, with Haney, McKenzie, Kissner and Maddy Hanks getting third in the 4x100 and O’Neill, Maddy Hanks, Cole and Danna Hanks taking second in the 4x400.
In the field events, Anissa Warner won both the high jump (5 foot, 3 inches) and long jump (16 feet, 6 inches), with Haney getting eighth in the long jump (13 feet, 10.5 inches) and Lundburg taking second in the triple jump (31 feet, 0.75 inches).
Lexee Craig was among three scoring Lady Panthers in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet for second place, while Maddy Hanks cleared 8 feet to tie for sixth and Miner went 7 feet, 6 inches for eighth.
In the throws, Haylee Ugalde went sixth and seventh in the shot put (29 feet, 11 inches) and discus (83 feet, 4 inches).
On the boys side, as with the girls, it was a combination of the top talent coming through and continued depth in many events, that carried the Panthers to the team win.
Paige Gann got the scoring started with a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter dash, with Powell then getting three scoring finishes in the 200.
A.J. Lewis took third in 24.63 seconds, Brooks Asher fifth in 25.35 seconds and Jon Morrow sixth at 25.39.
The multiple placings continued in the 400, with Mason Olsen winning the event in 54.06 seconds, Teagan Cordes finishing fourth at 55.25 and Joe Rogers sixth in 56.53.
Two more Panther placings came in the 800 in the form of Brandon Anderson (fifth in 2:19.88) and Matt Kousoulos (eighth, 2:27.47).
There were then four Powell boys among the top seven in the 1600 with Cody Akin getting second in 4:54.05, Jesse Erickson fifth (5:21.29), Anderson sixth (5:21.32) and Kousoulos seventh (5:22.15).
Alan Merritt led a trifecta for Powell in the 3200, winning in 11:15.30, while Jesse Erickson took second and Jayden Yates got third.
Nate MaGill would win the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.31 seconds, Kolter McGlaughlin was second in 18.09 and Morgan Erickson sixth in 19.66 for 21 more Panther points, and Gann would win the 300 hurdles (43 seconds flat) with Erickson taking fourth (48.41) for another 15 points.
Another very close race came in the 4x100 relay, as Zach Easum, Jacob Harrison, MaGill and Gann took third with a time of 47.09 seconds, less than one-half second out of second and less than one second off the winning time.
Cordes, MaGill, Asher and Olsen then raced to a second-place finish in the 4x400, shaving more than three seconds off the group’s seed time.
The jumping events went well for Powell as Charlie Hall was second in the high jump and Jackson Griffin third, while Lewis and Kanyon Gann went second and fourth in the long jump and four Panthers were among the top six in the triple jump.
Lewis got the win at 39 feet, 7.75 inches, Kanyon Gann was second at 37 feet, 8.75 inches, Dalton Woodward took fifth at 35-11.5 and Colby Warner sixth with 35-5.5.
Kaelan Groves tied for fifth in the pole vault at 10 feet, 6 inches for 3.5 crucial points for Powell.
Olsen (45-3.75) and Easum (41-4.25) added eight more by taking fourth and sixth in the shot put and would take the same spots in the discus with throws of 130-11 and 118, respectively.
Powell will be back in familiar territory, making a return trip to Cody for the Regional meet beginning at noon Friday and continuing Saturday at 9 a.m.
