A 52-year-old Powell man died Wednesday evening in a motorcycle crash in southeastern Nevada.
Gustavo Sbatella was an assistant professor for the University of Wyoming, based at the Powell Research and Extension Center.
The Nevada Highway Patrol said heavy rain contributed to the crash, which occurred on Interstate 15 near Valley of Fire State Park around 7 p.m., the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
Sbatella was the UW Extension irrigated crop and weed specialist and conducted research in the Big Horn Basin. In a news release, colleagues at the university described him as an accomplished scientist, a caring teacher of students and a friend.
“We lost an indispensable faculty member,” said Jim Heitholt, head of the Department of Plant Sciences in UW’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Sbatella, a native of Argentina, got his master’s degree and Ph.D in agronomy from UW in 2004 and 2006, respectively. He became a member of the university’s faculty in 2014.
