The Powell Middle School’s track and field teams had a spring season to remember, breaking nine school records — including some that had stood for more than 30 years.
For the seventh-grade teams, three field records and two track records were broken. In the girls’ shot put, Jamalee Hernandez set the new mark with a throw of 28 feet, 1 inch; there had been no previous record listed. In girls’ discus, Grace Coombs’ throw of 90 feet, 9 inches broke the previous record of 82 feet, 9.75 inches by almost 8 feet; the old record was set by Jessica Cross in 1988.
Seventh-grader Kami Jensen tied one school record and broke another to finish her season. In the pole vault, Jensen tied Emma Karhu’s school record of 7 feet, 6 inches, set in 2016. Meanwhile, on the track, Jensen’s time of 31.18 in the 200 meter hurdles broke the previous mark of 32.32, set by Bryten Checketts in 2016.
The girls’ 800 medley relay team of Kami Jensen, Mikayla Graham, Grace Coombs and Anna Bartholomew set the new standard with a time of 2:05.2. The previous record of 2:06.4 was set in 1986.
Also for the seventh-graders, the boys’ 800 medley relay team of Simon Shoopman, Weston Thomas, Sammy Adame and Jace Hyde broke a record that stood for 34 years, posting a time of 1:53.6. The previous record was 1:57.4.
The eighth-grade boys broke two records this year, setting new standards in the 800 medley relay and 1600 meter relay. The 800 medley team of Toran Graham, Sheldon Shoopman, Reed Smith and Cole Frank posted a record time of 1:46.7, besting the previous record of 2:06.4 set in 1986. The boys’ 1600 meter relay team of Reed Smith, Keaton Rowton, Jace Bohlman and Cole Frank ran a 3:49.87, breaking the previous record of 3:55.5 set in 1998.
The eighth-grade girls 1600 meter relay team of Kabrie Cannon, Ashlyn Shorb, Abbie Urbach and Jenna Hillman also set the new record with a time of 4:26.3, breaking the previous record of 4:29, set in 1999.
