Powell Middle School student earns first place in science fair

Posted

Layla Dilworth, a seventh grader at Powell Middle School, took first in mathematics at regionals. Her science fair entry was regarding Brouwer’s Fixed Point Theorem. Shortly thereafter, deadlines for the fair changed and although many students dropped out because of the changes, Dilworth persevered, reworking and perfecting her project despite the deadlines being moved up.

In her state interview, one of her judges noted that in all his years, he had never seen such an advanced math entry by a middle school student. Her hard work paid off, and she was awarded three prizes, including first place in the junior math divison, being named a Broadcom MASTERS nominee and earning the Lemelson Early Inventor prize. Her science teacher and science fair sponsor is Stan Hedges.
