It was a wild Saturday down in Riverton at the annual Spartan Invitational, with more than 950 young student athletes representing 13 schools making up the field.
And after the dust had settled on the controlled chaos of the day, the young Cubs had come away with a second-place finish for the seventh-grade girls and the eighth-grade girls tied for third with Cody.
With so many young athletes on hand to compete, such as 468 competing in the 100-meter dash alone, placements were at a premium and top-10 finishes were certainly accomplishments.
Briton Checketts had the first such finish as she placed eighth in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 400.
Emma Karhu then really stood out as she took second in the 400-meter run, fourth in the 800, and second in the 200-meter hurdles.
Checketts and Karhu also joined forces with Jala Satterwhite and Mattie Larsen to win the 4x200-meter relay.
Satterwhite also took third in the 200 hurdles and long jump (12-feet, 11-inches), while Larsen and Hailee Hyde tied for both first and second in the high jump, clearing 4-feet, 4-inches and 4-feet, 2-inches, respectively.
The 4x400 relay team of Hyde, Jozi Simpson, Raelynn Ramsey and Jenna Merritt set a personal best with a time of 5:00.06, to get a fifth-place finish.
Crystal Emmett heaved the shot put to a personal best 20-feet, 2-inches to place seventh and Elsie Spomer reached a personal best of 24-feet, 11.5-inches in the triple jump and finished eighth.
For the eighth-grade portion of the meet, Green River (95 points) and Riverton (73) took the top two team spots, with Powell and Cody each garnering 60 points to tie for third, three points ahead of Rock Springs in fifth.
The Cub-ettes earned two wins for the day, one coming from Marie Ramier in the discus, where she set a personal best of 72-feet, 11-inches, and the 4x200 relay team of Sabrina Shoopman, Natalie Dillivan, Gabi Metzler and Sidney O’Brien.
Dillivan, O’Brien, Hailee Paul and Kaitlyn Decker teamed up for second in the 4x400, and Decker placed second in the 1600.
Dillivan got third in the triple jump (28-feet, 3.75-inches) and Ramier also got a third in the shot put (23-feet, 8.5-inches).
Fourth-place finishes came from Decker in the 800 and Shoopman in the 100- and 200-meter hurdles, setting personal bests in both. Meanwhile, Paul, Metzler, Gabby Harshen and Samantha Herchkorn ran the 4x100 relay in 1:00.96, to take sixth.
Decker, McKenna Werbelow and Maggie Foster each took seventh in the long jump, discus and shot put, respectively. Herchkorn placed eighth in the high jump and Wycah Wainscott was eighth in the shot put.
Metzler added a ninth-place finish with a personal best 1:12.58 in the 400.
