The Powell Middle School boys’ track and field teams showed they belong at the Lander Best of the Best on May 12.

Leading the way was the seventh grade team, as the Cubs had one event win at the final competition of the season.

That came in the 800 sprint medley relay, as the team of Carson Basso, Manti Jeide, Danen Oram and Kaile Lasson won with a time of 1 minute, 55.09 seconds.

Individually the seventh grade Cubs had two second place finishes, as Ethan Kennedy took second in the 1600 meters (5:19.32) and Kaile Lasson was second in the shot put throwing 34 feet, 11 1/2 inches.

Other top eight finishes included Oram who tied for sixth in the 100 meter dash (13.11) and took seventh in the 200 meters (26.62) and 400 meters (59.54); Basso was sixth in the 400 meters (59.33); Jeide placed sixth in the 200 meter hurdles (31.18), sixth in the long jump (15-4 1/2) and eighth in the 100 meter hurdles (17.83) while Kennedy took eighth in the 800 meters (2:33.43).

The 4x400 relay team of Keaton Keller, Josiah Davis-Crevison, Kennedy and Jake Williams took third (4:37.1).

Additional competitors for the seventh graders included Keller who took 11th in the 800 meters (2:33.97) and tied for 25th in the 400 meters (1:05.55); Basso was 12th in the 200 meters (27.24); Williams took 15th in the 400 meters (1:03.21) and 17th in the 200 meter hurdles (34.32); Kayson Brown was 18th in the shot put (28-1) and 20th in the discus (77-4 1/2); Davis-Crevison took 28th in the 800 meters (2:44.71) while Clayton Cox was 30th in the discus (71-11) and 48th in the shot put (25).

“The hard work, teamwork and consistency paid off for the seventh grade boys who battled their way to a conference championship and proved they were one of the top teams all season,” coach Amanda Haney said.

No team scores were kept at the event.

The eighth grade boys also did not have an individual winner, as the highest placement came from Carter Gambill who was third in the 400 meters (54.98).

Additional top eight individual finishes came from Tucker McDonald who was fourth in the pole vault (9); Kendall Matthews tied for fifth in pole vault (8-6); Tyler Cole placed sixth in the 200 meter hurdles (29.5), sixth in the triple jump (36-4) and eighth in the 100 meter hurdles (16.93); Gambill was sixth in the high jump (5-4); Dawson Engesser took sixth in the shot put (37-8) and Ryder DeBoer was seventh in the 1600 meters (5:13.14).
