Two road trips wrapped up the regular season for the Powell Panther tennis teams, as the boys went 2-1 against Cody, Natrona County and Kelly Walsh and the girls went 0-3 but picked up some individual wins to end the year.

CODY MATCHES

Starting in Cody on Thursday, the Panther boys earned a second win over the Broncs in a week, this time in a closer scoreline between the two Park County rivals.

Memphis Solberg pushed his match against Beau Beachler at No. 1 singles, losing the first set 6-4 before winning the second set 6-2. He ultimately lost the third set 6-1.

Calvin Opps earned another win over Colby Beardall, winning in consecutive sets 6-4.

“Calvin had a good, solid win there against Colby,” coach Joe Asay said. “He just continues to play and make good effective shots. He’s learning how to build those shots, build those points and that’s a good win.”

Cody flipped the script at No. 1 doubles, as Kazdyn Lee and David Stensing fell to Wesley Law and Alex Stewart 6-2, 6-1.

Tucker Phillips and Anton Brostrom fell in the first set to John Bell and Hunter Fenton 6-2 before earning two close set wins 7-5 and 6-4 to take the win.

Powell earned the overall win as Lincoln Hull and Josh Waite defeated Ty Follweiler and Cade Ogden 6-1, 6-2.

On the girls’ side, Naomi Whipple returned to the No. 1 singles spot and defeated Hallie Despain 6-3, 6-2.

“We’re just eager to get her out there playing matches, but anxious that it’s aggravated and hindering her movement … She’s been pretty diligent about trying to rehab it,” Asay said. “She did get out there and had a decent enough match against Hallie.”

Another close match at No. 2 singles came between Aubrey Kelley and Kenley Stevens, as Kelley took the first set 6-1, and lost a second set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4). Stevens took the third set 6-4.

At No. 1 doubles, Emma and Aubrey Bear were unable to get a second consecutive win over Bella Beachler and Kimber Christler as they fell 6-1, 6-0.

Ashlee Jacobsen and Addy Kelley fell at No. 2 doubles to Abbey Edwards and Josey Corso in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.

Brynn Kelley and Karen Richmond fell to Aliyah Geving and Layla Turcer in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

CASPER MATCHES

Heading to Casper on Saturday the Panthers wrapped up the regular season, starting with Kelly Walsh.

Solberg earned the win at No. 1 singles, as he won in straight sets over Jackson Hallock 6-1, 6-2.

Opps fell at No. 2 singles to Bode Strand in identical sets 6-2.

Lee and Stensing fell to Noah Dresang and Talen Larsen in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.

Phillips and Brostrom fell to Gavin Larsen and Kamden Porter 6-1, 6-0.

Waite and Levi Rogers got the win for Powell after dropping the first set to Hudson Palmer and Jackson Lundberg in a tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6). The Panther duo won the second set 6-4 and the third set 6-3 as Powell fell overall 3-2.

On the girls’ side, the Panthers forfeited at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles all day Saturday due to athletes missing because of prior commitments.

“With lower numbers on the girls’ side we just chose to run those through as forfeits,” Asay said.

Whipple fell for her only conference loss of the year to Lauren Bradfield in straight sets with identical 6-2 scorelines.

The Bear cousins fell at No. 1 doubles to Olivia Wilson and Emma Sherman 6-1, 6-0.

Jacobsen and Richmond teamed up at No. 3 doubles but fell to Mackenzie Nokes and Hailey Larsen 6-1, 6-1.

“That third doubles team (from Kelly Walsh) could probably easily step up and be pretty competitive at the one doubles spot. They’ve got great depth, the kind of depth that any program would be envious to have,” Asay said.

Against the Mustangs the Panther boys earned the win 3-2, as Solberg took the victory over Thomas Gorman 6-3, 6-4.

Opps earned a comfortable win over Kaden Salas in identical 6-1 sets.

“They (Solberg and Opps) played great, patient tennis. Good to see them both get some wins as they finish out the regular season and a good way to launch themselves into hopefully a good week of practice here before we head to Gillette for some regional tennis,” Asay said.

Lee and Stensing fell to Kyle Miller and Bridger Haigler 7-5, 6-1.

Phillips and Brostrom lost to Nathan Danford and Jeremiah Martin 6-1, 6-4.

Rogers and Waite again went to three sets, as they fell in the first set to Konrad Smith and Henry Elston 7-5, before winning the second set 7-5.

In the third set they went to a tiebreaker, as the Panthers pulled out the win 7-6 (7-5).

On the girls’ side, Whipple defeated Harper Jay 6-1, 6-3.

The Bears fell to Elleanor Keller and Anja Kauffman 6-2, 6-1, while Jacobsen and Richmond fell to Scarlett Collier and Libby Smith 6-0, 6-0.

REGIONAL TOURNAMENT

The Panthers are on the road for the first of two weekends in Gillette, as they head to the 3A North Regional Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

“We’re hoping that we’ve been able to build on match play, and those opportunities that have come from working through nerves and pressure,” Asay said. “We just hope that we can kind of get settled in and make good, effective shots … Always excited to get to this point in the season, and kind of fun when it comes down to a tournament bracket style and some of the things that can be presented there for regionals.”

All athletes competing advance to the state tournament, as the regional tournament is strictly for seeding at the state tournament next week in Gillette.
