With early week snow accumulation, the prospects of the Powell Golf Club getting the season started on time, with Friday as the scheduled opening day, may have seemed a bit far-fetched.
But as the mercury rises while the week progresses, so too does the anticipation of area golfers to take those first swings of the golf year.
The snowfall, in fact, may have come at a good time, providing needed moisture for the fairways and recently uncovered greens.
“This spring snow is absolutely a blessing for us,” club pro Chris Jones said. “With such a dry winter, this was a much-needed blessing for all the parks, green areas, agriculture and golf courses.”
As long as the snow eases up in time, the course will open to its members and the public Friday, though the first few weeks will be walking only, with no carts allowed.
“The snow helps give some moisture, but it is still very dry and it will take some time after our irrigation system comes on before it really starts to soften up,” Jones said. “Taking carts out there right now would not be good for the course.”
Just being able to get the season open has Jones excited for the year ahead.
“We are primed to go,” he said. “I’m thrilled to be here and am looking forward to a great year.
“Our membership numbers are up, the course is in good condition and there will be some new tournaments on the roster this year. And with this spring snow gift from Mother Nature, we’re ready to go.”
The Powell Golf Club is scheduled to open at 8 a.m. tomorrow (Friday).
