The Powell City Council voted this month to renew its internet service contract with TCT for five years.
The city’s fiber internet system, Powellink, was constructed as a joint venture between the City, Northwest Joint Powers Board and private-sector partners. The project was completed in January 2009 and the city purchased the network in 2010.
Since then, TCT has operated and maintained the system, as well as paid a rental fee for use of the network, under a contract with the city. The contract was for 10 years, and it had two five-year extension options. This was the first extension.
City Administrator Zack Thorington said, under the contract, TCT provides the city’s internet services as if it were a separate utility department.
“TCT takes care of all new services and operations on the system and ... all the maintenance of the network for the City of Powell,” he explained.
The city has the option — either in five or 10 years depending on if it agrees to the second five-year extension — to agree on a new contract with TCT, sign a contract with another service provider or run the network itself.
