Powell City Council members aim to bring funds to community

Posted

Directing funds toward the Powell area means local representation is needed at budget meetings.

On Tuesday, Powell City Council member Jim Hillberry gave his fellow council members the rundown of the Wyoming Association of Municipalities meeting in Newcastle that was held on April 23-24.

“A great majority of funding from the Legislature is set up during those meetings,” Hillberry said.

Communities need to get involved with budget hearings across the state since the Wyoming Legislature takes direction from what’s decided during those meetings, Hillberry said.

The Powell City Council was asked to have representation at the Legislature’s next Joint Revenue Interim Committee meeting in Rawlins to discuss endowment funds, and councilman John Wetzel plans on attending on May 19.

Members on the Revenue Committee include Sen. R. Ray Peterson, R-Cowley, and Rep. David Northrup, R-Powell.

Endowment funds are basically an investment in county and local government funds, said Powell Mayor Don Hillman.

Wyoming Treasurer Mark Gordon is scheduled to give a presentation on investing county and local government funds to the team of legislators assigned to the interim committee.

“The Joint Revenue Committee is a critical committee, and we need to be on top of it,” Hillberry said.

WAM’s annual summer meeting will take place in Cheyenne on June 10-13, and its fall meeting will be held in Pinedale.
