Gavin Mills will carry Cowboy State colors into the selection of the outstanding scholar-athlete in 12 western states.Mills, a Powell High School senior, was named Wyoming's top scholar-athlete of 2008 at the March 21 banquet in Laramie of the Wyoming chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame. Mills, who will continue his football career at the Air Force Academy, is a three-time first team All State and All-Conference wide receiver and defensive back for the Powell Panthers. He carries a 4.0 grade point average and serves as PHS Student Body President.As the Wyoming chapter's scholar-athlete representative, Mills will compete for the Western Regional Scholar-Athlete of the Year with representatives from 25 other chapters in 12 western states. The western regional winner gets an all-expenses paid trip to the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame Banquet at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City in December with five other regional winners.Wyoming has had two previous western regional winners — Justin Hopkin of Burlington in 2004 and Chris Prosinski of Buffalo in 2005. The western regional winner will be announced in August or September.
