A 76-year-old man reportedly shot his 44-year-old girlfriend in the head before killing himself on Monday afternoon in Cody.
The woman survived the shooting, which Cody police called an attempted homicide. A Monday evening news release from the department described her injuries as “non-life-threatening.”
Police did not name the man or woman or disclose any identifying information beyond their ages; Park County Coroner Tim Power said Wednesday morning that he had not yet been able to reach the deceased’s next-of-kin.
According to the release, the woman told officers that her boyfriend had shot her during an argument inside their camper, at Parkway RV Campground on Cody’s West Strip. Although bleeding from her head, the woman was able to flee and seek help at the nearby Rodeo West Gas Station and convenience store.
“The male followed the female to the gas station, but apparently returned to the camper as law enforcement arrived,” Cody Police Officer John Harris wrote in the release.
Police and other first responders were summoned to the scene just before 3:30 p.m.
The woman was taken to Cody Regional Health for treatment while officers prepared to contact the suspect, Harris said. However, “as they approached, an officer heard what sounded like a single gunshot coming from inside the camper,” he wrote. Cody police officers and deputies from the Park County Sheriff’s Office then secured the immediate area, while the police department’s Tactical Response Team was summoned.
After officers were unable to contact the man, the team eventually fired several “Ferret Rounds,” filled with a pepper spray-like powder, to try forcing the suspect out of the camper. When that drew no response, the Cody Bomb Team piloted a specialized robot into the camper, where the 76-year-old was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.
An autopsy conducted Tuesday by Dr. Thomas Bennett in Basin preliminarily concluded that the man’s fatal injury “was consistent with being self-inflicted,” police said.
Cody police said Wednesday morning that they were continuing to investigate the incident and planned to send some of the evidence to the State Crime Lab for analysis.
