Powell police say they’re continuing to investigate the circumstances of a Monday evening crash on Coulter Avenue, in which an SUV drove into the wrong lane and hit an oncoming vehicle.
Around 5:15 p.m., authorities received a report that a dark-colored vehicle was driving erratically on U.S. Highway 14-A west of Powell, said Powell Police Lt. Matt McCaslin. A patrol officer traveled to the former Shopko parking lot along the highway (Coulter Avenue) and was waiting for the vehicle there when the collision occurred, around 5:30 p.m., McCaslin said. “Ultimately he ended up hearing the crash happen, as it happened just in front of Yellowstone Motors.”
McCaslin said the eastbound Ford Explorer apparently crossed the centerline and collided with the front of a westbound Chevy Suburban. The lieutenant wasn’t sure how fast the two SUVs were traveling in the 45 mph zone, but the force of the impact totaled both of the vehicles and resulted in air bags being deployed.
The two occupants of the Suburban were treated at the scene, McCaslin said. As for the driver of the Missouri-plated Explorer, identified as 31-year-old Lauren Davis of Powell, police said she was taken to Powell Valley Hospital for treatment and later released. Davis should not be confused with the Northwest College women’s basketball coach, who shares the same name.
Lt. McCaslin said Wednesday that no citations had been issued in connection with the crash while “the case is still under investigation.”
