The Powell Pioneers entered two more conference games into the win column Tuesday night, pushing past the Green River Knights 7-3 and 14-6 despite a less than desirable performance against the visiting team.
POWELL 7, GREEN RIVER 3
Needing a pair of conference wins at home before a long road trip, the Pioneers (14-17 overall, 5-3 ‘A’ West) got an early lead against the visiting Knights (3-20-1 overall, 0-6 ‘A’ West).
Abel Teten led off with a single, before stealing second and advancing to third on a passed ball.
Caden Diaz singled to score him, and Powell led 1-0.
Powell got into trouble in the second, when a walk, hit batter and a single loaded the bases with no outs for Green River.
One run scored on a passed ball, but Powell escaped with the game tied 1-1.
The Pioneers regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning, starting with a one out single by Ben Ostermiller.
He stole second before Kolby Gates walked to join him.
Dominik Bieber doubled and scored both runners as Powell led 3-1.
“He (Bieber) hit well. That from our nine hitter turns our order over and gets the top of our order back up,” manager Jason Borders said. “We had some good at bats. We fought a lot harder at the plate than I felt like we did against Cody.”
Powell extended its lead in the bottom of the third, starting with a leadoff single by Teten.
He stole second before Jordan Loera singled to score him and make it 4-1.
The Pioneers loaded the bases with two outs, but couldn’t find another run.
Scoring stalled until the top of the sixth, when a leadoff home run brought the Knights closer at 4-2.
Powell finished off its scoring in the bottom half of the inning, when Trevion Solberg and Ostermiller singled before Ryan Barrus was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs.
Bieber singled and scored a pair, before a passed ball advanced Barrus and Bieber.
Teten grounded out and scored Barrus, making the score 7-2.
Green River added one more in the top of the seventh with a single and a double, before Powell finished with the 7-3 win.
Powell outhit Green River 8-7 but committed more errors 3-0.
Bieber led at the plate going 2-3 with four RBIs.
Ostermiller went 5-2/3 innings, giving up four hits, one earned run, three walks and 14 strikeouts.
“It’s hard to complain when your pitcher gets 14 strikeouts,” Borders said. “He threw a good game.”
POWELL 14, GREEN RIVER 6
The Pioneers had a similar start in the second game, getting a run early against the Knights.
Teten singled to lead off, and advanced on two separate passed balls before scoring on a Loera sac fly to make it 1-0.
Powell extended its lead in the second, starting with a Solberg double and an Ostermiller single.
Barrus hit a sac bunt to advance the runners, before Gates walked to load the bases.
Bieber singled and scored two, and Loera added another with a single to make it 4-0 after the second.
Green River got runs back in the third, starting with two hit batters before an error loaded the bases with no outs.
A single scored one, but a throw in from right field from Solberg found its way to Bieber who threw it to the plate and Fauskee tagged out the runner to prevent another run scoring.
After a strikeout, a walk reloaded the bases for Green River, and a single scored a pair to cut the lead to 4-3.
The Pioneers found their offense in the bottom of the third, as Solberg singled with one out.
Barrus singled and reached on an errant throw, advancing to second while Solberg rounded to third base.
Gates singled and scored Solberg, while a balk by the pitcher scored Barrus during Bieber’s at bat.
Bieber walked before Teten singled to load the bases.
Loera singled, and an error in right field by the Knights allowed three runs to score as Powell led 9-3.
Green River got a couple of runs back in the fourth, starting with a hit batter and a walk.
A passed ball coupled with an error allowed a run to score and make it 9-4.
A walk put runners on the corner, and a wild pitch scored a run and made it 9-5.
That score held until the bottom of the sixth, when the Pioneers found their bats again and pulled away.
Fauskee walked to lead off, and scored on a double by Solberg.
Ostermiller was hit by a pitch, and a Barrus bunt led to an errant throw and scored a run to make it 11-5.
Barrus stole second, and Christian Love singled to score Ostermiller and make it 12-5.
Bieber singled to score another, before Teten singled to load the bases.
Loera lined out but Love scored after tagging up and made it 14-5.
Green River managed to load the bases but only scored one run in the top of the seventh as Powell finished with the 14-6 win.
Loera led going 2-4 at the plate with four RBIs, Bieber also went 2-3 with three RBIs while Teten had the most hits going 3-4 with no runs batted in.
Diaz went 3-2/3 innings, giving up only two hits, one earned run, three walks and six strikeouts.
Booka Fazen gave up no hits with two walks and five strikeouts in two innings of relief while Loera closed giving up one hit, no earned runs or walks with two strikeouts.
“It’s hard to sit and complain about two conference wins,” Borders said. “I don’t feel like we played down to their level completely but I felt like we did at times … They (Green River) were scrappy and competitive.”
Following a series of ‘A’ West games on Tuesday the Pioneers sit second with five wins and only one series left to play, likely needing a sweep of Evanston in July to claim one of the top two automatic bids for state.
BWW TOURNAMENT
The Pioneers set off on a road trip Thursday and will not return to Park County until early July, starting with the Buffalo Wild Wings Tournament in Billings.
Powell’s first contest at the tournament was an ‘A’ East opponent in the Sheridan Jets (18-11 overall, 4-2 ‘A’ East) before taking on the Williston Oilers (2-11).
The Pioneers have one game today (Friday) against the Lethbridge Miners (20-3) at 12:30 p.m. to wrap up pool play.
Powell’s opponents on Saturday and Sunday will be dependent on results Thursday and Friday.
“We have five games against teams that don’t matter to clean stuff up this weekend,” Borders said.
