It was a gamble that made sense, but ultimately didn't pay off for the Powell Pioneers, who were eliminated from the state tournament in Gillette Friday.
With two of his best and most experienced starting pitchers rested and ready to throw, Powell head coach Jason Borders instead started 16-year-old Matt Sweet against the Gillette Rustlers. Sweet allowed 11 runs in four-and-one-third innings, which proved to be too big of a hole for Powell's offense to dig out of, and the Pioneers lost 15-10 to end their season.

But Powell's offense scored only two runs during that same stretch of the game.
Frankie Vogt was 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored.
Grady Sanders was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.
