The Powell Pioneers couldn't provide Frankie Vogt with any run support, and Vogt couldn't keep the Pioneers close heading into the final inning of Powell's devestating loss to Cody.
What was a tense pitcher's duel for seven innings turned into an 8-1 rout in favor of the Cubs Thursday in Gillette. Now the Pioneers will have to battle through the loser's bracket to make it to the state championship game.
Vogt pitched seven-and-one-third great innings before allowing three hits and six runs in the eigth. He allowed six hits, issued three walks and struck out 10 for the game.
Bryce Wright came in to pitch the final out of the inning. He gave up one hit before striking out the final Cody batter.
Powell's defense didn't bail Vogt out of many mistakes. The Pioneers committed five errors, including two dropped fly balls and a dropped line drive, likely caused (or at least influenced) by the afternoon's harsh sun.
With Cody runners on second and third with one out, right-fielder Brendon Phister dropped a line drive off the bat of Brock Goodwin, but still was able to get the ball to home in time to prevent a run from scoring. However, when Goodwin took off from first for second, Powell catcher Jared Wantulok attempted to gun him down. Wantulok's throw sailed over shortstop Cory Heny's head and allowed a run to score.
That was the beginning of the end for the Pioneers, who couldn't stop Cody on defense or catch up when on offense.
Powell was retired in order in five innings.
The Pioneers managed only four hits, all singles, and went down 1-2-3 in five innings.
Brendon Phister, Hayden Cragoe, Wright and Grady Sanders each got a hit, but only Cragoe came around to score.
Powell will face Gillette Friday at 9:30 a.m. in a win-or-go-home game. If the Pioneers win they will play a second Friday game against the winner of tomorrow's Green River vs. Douglas matchup.
