Pioneers go 2-3 at Riverton tourney

Posted

It was a roller coaster ride of a weekend as the Powell Pioneers of the baseball diamond played a three-day tournament in Riverton.

The Powell nine won two of their games, lost three, and the overall run total had them down just five runs total, although none of the games were very close.

The games began Thursday, with the Pioneers getting a 7-1 win over the Green River B team and falling 10-3 to the host Riverton squad.

In the win, Carson Asher pitched five innings, giving up just four hits and striking out 10, while collecting two hits of his own.

Kaden Moore also had two hits, including a double, and scored twice.

In the loss, however, Riverton jumped out with a six-run first inning that set the tone, and the Powell offense never got on track.

Teagan Cordes had a double, a single and an RBI, with Tyler Feller adding a run-scoring single, but Riverton starter Steven Reinig allowed just two other hits and struck out 11.

The Pioneers got revenge in a big way during their lone game Friday, routing the Riverton B team 14-1.

The hosts actually got on the board first, scratching for a run in the bottom of the opening inning on two walks, a fielder’s choice and a single.

But that single would be the only hit of the game for Riverton, as Powell starter Feller only allowed three more walks and no hits the rest of the way, while striking out eight over five innings.

The Pioneer offense, meanwhile, went right to work, scoring four times in both the second and third innings, before adding a six-spot in the fifth to get the win going away.

In the second, with one out, Carson Asher doubled to left and came around on a Carson Murdock single through the left side.

Bennett Walker then worked a base on balls and Ben Jackson singled Murdock home.

Then, with two outs, Cordes brought both runners in with a single for a 4-1 lead.

In the third, the rally again started with one out as Moore and Asher hit back-to-back singles, and with two out, Walker drove Moore home with a line-shot to left and Jackson ripped one to right to score Asher.

Luke Washington was hit by a pitch and Cordes walked to push two more runs across and push the lead to 8-1.

The bats were quiet in the fourth, but the volume turned up in the fifth as Zavier Wantulok blasted a two-run double, Moore had a 2-RBI single and Asher added a run-scoring hit.

Asher led the hit-parade by going 3-for-4, with Moore, Murdock and Jackson each tallying two hits.

“We wanted to prove that we could finish a team that we got up on early,” Asher said. “It was a combination of everyone hitting the ball hard and being aggressive with our base running.”

The weekend would end with two losses Saturday, by a 10-2 score against the Riverton A team and a 13-4 final against the Green River Bs.

In the first game, Riverton jumped out early and kept it going, scoring at least one run in each of the five innings of play.

In the finale, Powell scored the opening run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Moore, but it was answered by five runs in the top of the second.

The Pioneers got a run back when Ezra Andreason singled home Cameron Schmidt, but Green River put up seven runs in the top of the third to all but put it away.

“In all the games we lost, we got down early, which we’ve struggled with all year,” Moore said. “It’s not like they had better players, they just played better than us in those games. It’s all a process and I think that we show improvement in spurts every weekend.”

The Pioneers will be back in action this week with home dates Wednesday and Thursday.

Lovell will come to Powell Wednesday for a doubleheader with games slated for 5 and 7 p.m., with Riverton in town Thursday for games at 3 and 5 p.m.
