The second oldest Powell Pioneers (20-13) head on the road for the class ‘B’ state tournament in Riverton, hoping to bring home a state championship as the No. 2 seed out of the Northwest.
Games kicked off in May for the ‘B’ team, going 4-2 in the first month before carrying a six game winning streak into the second week of June.
After two losses, the Pioneers alternated between several three game winning streaks with a singular loss sandwiched between to end the month of June with a 20-7 record.
July has not been kind to Powell, as the Pioneers are currently in a slump with a six game losing streak to end the regular season.
At the plate the Pioneers are led by Will Hatch, who is batting .465 and leading the team in hits and RBIs with 46 each.
Hatch has also scored 50 times and only struck out nine times in 99 at bats.
Pitching wise Hatch has pitched 21-1/3 innings, going 2-0 and giving up only 13 hits. He holds a 5.25 ERA.
Just behind Hatch at the plate is Owen Jones, who is hitting .451 and has 41 total hits and 24 RBIs.
Jones leads the Pioneers on the mound, pitching 41-1/3 innings, going 7-2 with 90 strikeouts and a 1.694 ERA.
Garrett Davis has also had a strong season on the mound, going 20-1/3 innings, with a 3.443 ERA.
Starting the tournament on Friday the Pioneers take on the Cheyenne Post 6 Prep, which holds a 31-19-2 record this season.
Cheyenne has a strong record since July started, going 7-2 heading into the state tournament.
If Powell wins, it advances to 4 p.m. on Saturday to face the winner of the Evanston Outlaws (23-12) and the Sheridan Cavalry (23-15) which play at 10 a.m. on Friday. If the Pioneers lose, they will face the loser of that contest at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the loser out in a double-elimination bracket.
