PHS track teams crush competition

Posted

Unlike the Powell High School track and field team’s first few meets, Saturday’s event at Rocky Mountain High School featured sunshine and temperatures in the high 70s.

The Panthers took advantage of the warm weather, placing first as a team in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions. PHS girls tallied 287 team points, while the boys recorded 206.5.

Altogether, the teams combined for nearly 500 points, far ahead of second-place Rocky Mountain High School, which posted 196 points between its girls’ and boys’ teams.

“The kids did a great job of taking advantage of the weather and really putting things together,” PHS head coach Scott Smith said.

Several Panthers finished first in their individual events from both teams. Daniel Merritt (3200), Zach Ratcliff (long jump) and Toran Graham (shot put) were winners on the boys’ side. And Jenna Hillman (100), Megan Jacobsen (800), Brynn Hillman (1600), Kami Jensen (100 hurdles), Lauryn Bennett (300 hurdles), Waycee Harvey (long jump), Emma Karhu (pole vault), Reagan Thompson (shot put), Cassidy Miner (discus) did so for the girls.

Ratcliff and Bennett had two of the most impressive performances in their respective events. Ratcliff, a junior, set a personal record by more than a foot in the boys’ long jump, winning with a distance of 19 feet, 6 inches. And Lauryn Bennett’s time of 51.37 in the girls’ 300 hurdles shaved a few seconds off her personal best, enabling her to take first.

In addition to dozens of stellar individual performances, the Panthers’ relay teams displayed their prowess on Saturday. The boys’ and girls’ sprint medley relay teams both set school records, with times of 3:47.59 and 4:23.06, respectively. Kadden Abraham, Riley Bennett, Cole Frank and Merritt placed first in the boys’ race while Jenna Hillman, Harvey, Anna Bartholomew and Jacobsen took second in the girls’ sprint medley relay.

Two other relay teams placed first — the boys’ 4x100 (Abraham, Sam Whitlock, Riley Bennett, and Reed Smith) and girls’ 4x800 (Hailee Hyde, Brynn Hillman, Abby Wambeke and Bartholomew).

PHS will vie to build on these impressive showings from both teams on Friday afternoon, when the Panthers head to the Cody Invitational. Earlier in the year, the PHS girls placed first at the Yellowstone Sports Medicine Invitational.

While Saturday was certainly a step in the right direction, Smith hopes to see more growth from his athletes in the weeks ahead.

“The team is coming together well but we still need to keep improving for regionals and state,” Smith said.
