PHS teams both lose two

Their records might not be as much an indication of improvement, but given the level of competition Powell soccer has faced in this early part of the season, progress is certainly being made.

The Lady Panthers took two losses late last week, 10-0 on the road at Cody Thursday and 6-0 against visiting Worland Friday.

The contest against the Warriors at home was telling, given the Worland girls No. 1 ranking in the state among 3A schools.

The Lady Warriors had beaten Cody by a 5-3 score a week earlier and had handled 4A Riverton by an 8-2 score just last Tuesday.

And yet, even with that powerhouse on the pitch Friday, Powell kept things even in a scoreless tie 25 minutes into the match.

Once unleashed, however, Worland opened the floodgates a bit, scoring four times in the final 15 minutes of the first half.

Given the intermission to regroup, the Lady Panthers dug back in and allowed just two more goals over the final 40 minutes to provide for the final margin.

“That’s the No. 1 team there,” head coach Jack Haire said. “We had good ball movement today and had some good shots. We’re a young team, but the heart and integrity of this team is the key and they continue to build on that, which is what we need to do moving forward.”

The Powell boys also added two more losses to their docket, but kept things close in Thursday’s 4-1 downing at Cody and Friday’s 2-0 loss at home to Worland.

“Both of the games were really close, we were right there with them,” assistant coach Russ Schwahn said. “It was just a matter of a few-minutes lull where they got on the board and that was the difference. But just seeing this team and how they are playing compared to the first week of the season, it is amazing how much we have improved.”

Steps in the right direction, which both Panther teams will have a chance to continue as they head to tournaments this weekend.

The Powell boys will be taking part in the Green River Invitational Friday and Saturday, while the Lady Panthers will head to Worland for this weekend’s Warrior Invite.
