Two home meets saw a variety of competition for the Powell Panther boys’ swim and dive team, defeating Worland 97-77 in a dual before placing fourth in the Gene Dozah Invitational on Saturday that featured nearly every team in the Panther’s conference.

Starting the weekend, the Panthers welcomed Worland on Friday, as the Panthers won six individual events and two of three relays to pull away from the Warriors.
Will Fuller enjoyed two event wins, taking first in the 200 free with a time of 2 minutes, 17.49 seconds, and also winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.41.
Taggart Shumway also earned two first places, winning the diving with a 202.25 and taking the top spot in the 100 free with a 1:01.29.
“Any time he dives over 200 it’s good. It wasn’t quite his PR (personal record), but he’s excited any time he gets over 200 so he had a good night,” coach Stephanie Warren said.
Hugh Carpenter placed first in the 100 fly (1:00.9) and Tyler Kruger won the 500 free (6:29.13).
In the relays, the team of Fuller, Conner Mayes, Kruger and Shumway won the 200 medley (2:00.66) and the team of Fuller, Mayes, Carpenter and Shumway won the 200 free (1:41.27).
Second place finishes came from Sam Williams in the 200 free (2:19.07), Carpenter in the 200 IM (2:16.46), Gabe Buchholtz in the 100 back (1:11.73) and Mayes in the 100 breast (1:18.59).
“They swam well. They put their best foot forward,” Warren said.
GENE DOZAH INVITE
Staying at home on Saturday the Panthers welcomed several more teams, including more conference teams alongside Worland including Cody, Buffalo and Newcastle, as well as 4A Riverton.
“Saturday was great to see multiple teams,” Warren said. “It brings a bit higher energy and more divers.”
Each team the Panthers will see at the conference meet was in attendance apart from Douglas, with Warren noting it’s great to see who they will be competing with to end the year as they hit the midway point of the season.
“It’s great for them to experience both in swimming and diving who our conference swimmers are going to be and know what their competition is going to look like as we’re starting to kind of get into gear for training for that,” Warren said.
While Powell did not come out on top in any individual events the Panthers did have a number of top finishes across the board.
Carpenter grabbed the highest placement in the 200 free (2:02.83), finishing second.
He was followed by Shumway who took third in diving (192.3) and Fuller also took third in the 100 back (1:02.94).
Powell notched additional qualifying times by athletes already qualified for the state meet over the two days but did not add any new qualifiers for the state meet next month in Gillette.
Buffalo won the team competition with 305 points just ahead of Cody with 293 while Riverton had 228 and Powell was in fourth with 161.
WORLAND WEEKEND
After the home weekend the Panthers head to Worland on Friday and Saturday for a pair of meets.
Powell is set to take on the Warriors on Friday in a dual, but Warren is hopeful Cody will join them in order to make it a triangular.
The Panthers return to Worland on Saturday for an invitational, where Powell is hoping to see most of its conference opponents again, including Douglas for the first time, although Buffalo is not expected to attend.
“I hope that maybe we’ll see Douglas, but I don’t know for sure, so it would be nice if we did get to see them before conference,” Warren said. “We’re just excited to start seeing them (the swimmers) really start to perform like they know how to.”
