PHS swimmers second at seven-team Warrior Invite

Lander won the Warrior Invite at Worland on Saturday, but the Panthers took second, pulling 33 points ahead of third-place Buffalo in the seven-team field.

Powell High School coach Stephanie Warren said her squad had “lots of good swims and we are working hard to prepare for the weeks ahead.”

Freshman Ashton Prentiss joined the list of Panthers pre-qualified for the state championship. He’s in after a six-round diving score of 150.2. Meanwhile, Ben Cannizzaro added the 500 free to his list of qualifications with a season-best time of 6:13.78.

Warren had high praise, too, for Nate Johnston. The sophomore, she said, posted an “amazing Hall of Fame time” of 1:03.90 in the 100 breaststroke. That shaved 0.88 seconds from his previous best and moved him up to third on the all-time, PHS Hall of Fame ladder. Johnston also placed first in the 200 individual medley at the meet.

Richard Spann took second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 50 freestyle.

Among those posting season best times were: Tarren Blackmore (200 free and 100 fly), Ben Cannizzaro (200 free and 500 free), Aidan Cannizzaro (100 back), Jay Cox (100 fly and 100 breast), Hunter Davis (50 free and 100 back), Kobus Diver (200 IM), Cole Frank (100 free), Nathan Fuller (200 IM and 500 free), Ben Hawley (100 free), Johnston (200 IM and 100 breastroke), Rui Parker (100 free), Prentiss (100 back), Francis Rogers (500 free), Spann (100 back), Kyler Warren (200 free and 100 breast) and Josh Wright (200 free).

The Panthers’ last regular season home swim meet is tonight (Tuesday) at 5 p.m. at the Powell Aquatic Center in a triangular with Worland and Cody. However, the Panthers will have one more home competition, when they host the 3A West Conference Swim Championships on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7-8.

Senior night is slated for Friday with an afternoon celebration after practice. The senior team members will also be recognized at halftime of the PHS basketball game Friday night, which begins at 7 p.m.

The Panthers are on the road Saturday for the Lander Invitational.
