PHS swimmers pick up two more victories

The Powell High School’s girls swim team traveled to Cody for a quad and to Riverton for a meet last week, and the results wound up pretty similar. In both events, the deep Panther squad handily won the team competitions while piling up multiple individual victories and a dozen personal bests.

PHS headed to Cody for Friday’s Terry Bartlett Invitational and amassed 441 points, easily outpacing Worland (245), Buffalo (229) and Cody (212).

The meet was scored to 12 places in individual events (with a maximum of four athletes from a team), which played to Powell’s significant depth advantage, said coach Bob Smartt. A total of 17 different Panthers put up points as the team featured “many fine swimming and diving performances,” Smartt said and improved on their score from last year.

Individual winners were: Sydney Legler (200 and 500 free); Kami Jensen (six dives); Grace Sapp (backstroke); Emma Mitchell (breaststroke); and the 200 medley relay team of Sapp, Mitchell, Croix Tryon, and Lily Halter.

Abigail Casey and Brinly Casey, meanwhile, swam to personal bests in two different events each while the Powell coach also singled out big time cuts by Charlee Brence, Aubree Fisher, Paige Thomas and Brinly Casey, plus improved diving by Emma Brence.

Due to an illness, Kate Miller was called upon to swim the 500 yard freestyle for the first time in her life — and she wound up breaking the eight minute mark and picking up five points for the team.

“The coaches appreciate her positive attitude toward the swim,” Smartt said.

Competing in Riverton on Saturday against the hosting Wolverines and the visiting Rawlins Outlaws, the Panthers won eight of the 12 events while adding a state qualifier and delivering a dozen personal bests.

Once again, “our depth was in evidence,” Smartt said.

The field was thinner than expected, as Buffalo and Pinedale wound up missing the meet, and Powell racked up 480 points to pull away from Rawlins (316) and Riverton (159).

Thomas won the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:13.13 and became Powell’s 10th athlete to qualify for the Class 3A State Meet in the process.

Mitchell, meanwhile, broke through the one minute barrier in the 100 freestyle, beating the field with a time of 59.96. And in her first high school victory, sophomore Kathryn Brence won the 100 breaststroke in 1:21.67. Her sister, Charlee Brence, posted personal bests in the 50 free and 500 free.

Among the eight divers who competed in Riverton, Powell’s student-athletes filled up the podium — with Kami Jensen, Taycee Walker, Aramonie Brinkerhoff and Emma Brence finishing first, second, third and fourth, respectively.

“Our divers continue to impress,” said Smartt.

The Powell team will stay busy this week, heading to Worland on Friday afternoon for a 5 p.m. meet and then turning around to host the Gene Dozah Invitational on Saturday. Eight teams are expected at the Powell Aquatic Center, including the defending Class 3A state champions from Green River. The Powell meet starts at 10 a.m. Saturday.
