Over 100 PCSD1 students set to graduate

Powell High School’s class of 2025 will graduate 119 students on Sunday — collectively they have earned $4,950,615 in scholarships offered.

“We've sure enjoyed our time with you here at Powell High School … but tonight is a great night to get to recognize our seniors' different extracurricular and academic successes, and to present them with the varied awards and scholarships that they have earned,” Principal Tim Wormald said. “This is certainly an accomplished group, and we are very proud of them for their continuous academic and extracurricular excellence.”

The night revealed some significant scholarships for students including three University of Wyoming Trustees’ Scholarships to Alan Crawford, Dallin Waite and Dexter Opps. Trevion Solberg earned the James E. Casey Scholarship, from the National Merit Scholarship Program and the UPS Foundation, which will provide him with $10,000 over the next four years. This is the first time in almost a decade a Powell High School student has received a monetary award from the National Merit Scholarship Program, counselor Trevor Lee said.

Danica Bobick received $100,000 under the post Sept. 11 GI Bill and Liam Taylor was recognized for enlisting in the United States Marine Corps as a reconnaissance Marine.

Other students won large scholarships to out of state universities, with some earning thousands of dollars in total scholarships offered.

Other notable awards included the first issuing of the Eyob Robirds Memorial Scholarship, a $200 award to Enrique Gonzalez.

Robirds, a PHS graduate, passed away in February following a sudden illness.

“Hundreds of people packed his funeral to celebrate a young man who faced many challenges in his life, yet never lost his smile, kindness toward others, and his determination to prove that success isn't always found through grades and test scores. This award is to recognize students' hard work and ability to overcome obstacles,” Lee said.

The Balfour Award was given to students Isabelle Lobingier and Alan Crawford. The awardees are selected by school staff based on scholarship, loyalty and achievement. Each winner has been engraved on a plaque at Powell High since 1931.

Powell High’s graduation will take place at 2 p.m. in the Powell High gym, with grads represented by valedictorian Dexter Opps and salutatorian Dallin Waite.

Shoshone Learning Center and Park 1 Virtual Academy will be at noon in the Powell High School Auditorium. The learning center has a graduating class of 19 — 10 of those students have completed their graduation requirements ahead of Feb. 5. P1VA will have three students graduating on Sunday.
