After a meet cancellation on Thursday the Powell Panther girls’ track team put up strong performances Saturday at the Rocky Mountain Invite, claiming the team title by 25.5 points, winning six events and adding a new state qualifier in the process.
The new qualifier came in the pole vault, where Kate Williams cleared 9 feet to earn her spot at the state meet.
Powell also got a strong contribution in the discus, where Nyah Johnson took the top spot throwing 102 feet as the Panthers took 1-2-3 in that event.
“The girl throwers, hurdlers and vaulters continued to score a lot of points for us and the sprinters competed well but times didn’t show it with a head wind,” coach Scott Smith said.
Powell also got a pair of wins from Kinley Cooley who won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 26.71 seconds, and the 3200 meters in 11:40.04.
Paige Sanders took the top spots in the long jump and triple jump with leaps of 16-9 and 35-0 1/4 respectively.
The Panthers got a number of top five finishes in addition to the victors, including Kindyle Floy who took second in the 100 meter dash (13.5) and third in the 200 meters (27.95); Audrey Johnson placed second in the 400 meters (1:00.22); Kenna Jacobsen placed second in the 1600 meters (5:40.82); Karee Cooley took second in the 3200 meters (11:45.16) and third in the 800 meters (2:30.87); Nalani Jordan placed second in the shot put (32-11) and discus (101-8); Anai Torres took third in the shot put (32-2) and discus (101-5); Shelby Zickefoose took fourth in the 3200 meters (12:29.56); Abigail Visocky placed fourth in the pole vault (7-6); Salem Brown took fifth in the 1600 meters (6:56.67); Macie Velasco placed fifth in the 3200 meters (13:08.82) and Vera Thomas placed fifth in the 100 meter hurdles (18.51).
Karee Cooley added the 3200 meters as a qualifying time, and the Panthers also added a second option in the 1600 sprint medley relay as the team of Floy, Sanders, Johnson and Jacobsen took second with a time of 4:23.91.
“This turned out to be a very good team meet, a lot of personal records, new state qualifiers and people starting to solidify their varsity spots,” Smith said.
Powell finished in the top spot with 186.5 points, while Worland was second with 161 and Lovell was third with 93.
The Panthers have the rest of this week to prepare for one of two meets on Friday, with some Panthers earning their spots at the Wyoming Track Classic in Casper and the rest of the team heading to Lovell for an invitational.
“This will be the last week for the entire team, then we have the Cody meet to pare down to our regional team,” Smith said.
Smith added that full entries for the classic will not be known until Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, but several Panthers should have the opportunity to compete against the best from all classifications.
The top eight competitors in sprints and hurdles qualify, the top nine in field events and the top 12 in the 1600 and 3200 races will be invited.
