PHS girls’ track second at Kohnke

Posted

Sunny weather brought tough competition at the LA Kohnke Invitational on Saturday at Powell High School, as the Panther girls finished second paced by three event wins and four new state qualifying marks.

Two new individual state qualifying marks came from Karee Cooley, who took the top spot in the 3200 meters with a time of 11 minutes, 55.51 seconds, and second in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:30.78 to qualify in both events.

The Panthers also qualified the only two relays that hadn’t yet achieved that mark, as the 4x800 relay team of Macie Velasco, Kara Sanders, Anyston Keller and Shelby Zickefoose qualified with a time of 10:31.86 to take second, and the 1600 sprint medley team of Paige Sanders, Ashlee Jacobsen, Kaytlee George and Cooley qualified with a time of 4:25.3 to also take second.

“It is always good to get relays qualified early and it was great to see how much they exceeded the marks,” coach Scott Smith said.

Powell also had an individual two event winner, as Paige Sanders claimed the top spot in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 10 inches, and the top spot in the triple jump with a leap of 37-0 1/4.

The Panthers added a number of top five finishes, as Nalani Jordan took second in the discus (115-8) and third in the shot put (36-0 1/2); George finished third in the 400 meters (1:01.37) and fifth in the 200 meters (27.09); Zickefoose was third in the 1600 meters (5:39.33); Kindyle Floy and Keylyn Knuth tied for third in the high jump (4-9); Kate Williams finished fifth in the pole vault (8-6) and Anai Torres placed fifth in the discus (108).

As a team the Panther girls took second, earning 116 points, finishing behind Sheridan which won with 141 points and just ahead of Worland in third with 109.

“There is no shame taking second to Sheridan any time, they are one of the top programs in 4A both boys and girls,” Smith said.

The Panthers don’t have to go far for their next meet, as they are set to host a triangular with Cody and Worland this week.

That meet was originally scheduled for Thursday, but due to projected weather that meet has been moved up to today (Tuesday).

Events will begin at 4 p.m. with field events, followed by track events beginning at 5 p.m.

That will be the only meet for the Panthers this week, as there are several meets scheduled for next week.
