PHS girls third in Worland

Posted

After a quick turnaround and with a lighter squad, the Powell Panther girls’ track and field team finished third at the D&D Invitational in Worland on Tuesday, April 15.

Individually the Panthers were led by Paige Sanders, who continued her impressive sophomore campaign with victories in both the long jump and triple jump, traveling 16 feet, 7 inches, and 35 feet, 5 3/4 inches respectively.

“Paige works hard and focuses on the important fundamentals,” coach Scott Smith said. “She is still young and has great potential. She is a lot of fun to watch.”

In addition to Sanders the Panthers had one more victory in Worland, as the 4x100 relay team of Averie Warner, Addy Brown, Sanders and Kindyle Floy won in 52.55 seconds and earned a state qualifying mark in the process.

Powell also had a number of top five finishes, as Kenna Jacobsen finished second in the 1600 meters (5:34.66); Kate Williams took second in the pole vault (8-6); Nalani Jordan took second in the discus (113-11); Floy placed third in the 200 meters (27.52); Anai Torres took third in the discus (108-10); Sanders placed fourth in the 200 meters (28.17); Myah Rakness finished fourth in the 800 meters (2:38.05); Abigail Visocky took fourth in the pole vault (7-6); Shelby Zickefoose took fifth in the 3200 meters (12:27.75) and Adrianna Torres took fifth in the discus (100-7).

In the team standings the Panthers finished third with 122 points, as Cody won with 201 points, Worland was second with 190.5 and Lovell was fourth with 34.5 points.

After the D&D Invitational the Panthers took the rest of the week off from competition, but have a busy schedule ahead this week. There are three meets planned in a five day span, and Smith said the Panthers will likely each go to a couple of the meets.

“With the weather and break we are trying to set our kids up to be ready to compete mentally since most of them will get two meets in this week,” Smith said. “We just need to stay focused on the basics.”

The first opportunity on the calendar is a meet in Sheridan today (Tuesday) at the Gary Benson 3A/4A Clash, with additional opportunities coming Thursday in Cody and Saturday in Cowley at the Rocky Mountain Invite.
