Amongst close competition the Powell High School boys’ track and field team brought home a trophy, finishing third at the State Track and Field Meet in Casper.
One school record fell at the meet, as junior Sawyer Wormald finished third in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 37.84 seconds, breaking Justin Cross’s record of 37.96 seconds that was set in 2007.
“The 300 hurdles was one of the most exciting races of the entire meet with three guys pushing each other all the way down the stretch,” coach Scott Smith said. “That record that Sawyer broke was … the 3A state record until three years ago.”
Wormald added another top finish, taking second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.4 seconds.
Sophomore Braxton Nelson led the Panthers in points, taking second in the high jump clearing 6 feet, 5 inches, second in the triple jump with a leap of 43-10 1/2, third in the 200 meters with a time of 21.93 and the long jump with a leap of 20-9.
“Braxton competed really well in four different events that you rarely see one person do well in all of them,” Smith said.
One of the few seniors on the team and the only individual senior to score points was Korbyn Warren, who took fourth in the 3200 meters in 10:19.77 and seventh in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:43.85.
Additional top eight finishes for the Panthers included junior Dayton Lawrence in the pole vault as he placed fifth clearing 12 feet even; junior Tanner Seifert took sixth in the 400 meters (51.77); junior Brady Harvey placed sixth in the discus (141-1); junior Lincoln Crawford took eighth in the 100 meter dash (12.24) and eighth in the 300 meter hurdles (1:46.81) while sophomore Brayden Benander took eighth in the 400 meters (52.97).
The Panthers scored 78 points to take third, six points ahead of Mountain View in fourth, while Lovell was second with 97 points and Cody took the team title with 141 points.
“The boys had a great season, capping it off by bringing home team hardware,” Smith said. “We will miss our seniors, but overall this team is really young.”
Heading into next year the Panthers graduate seven points from their lineup from Warren, and lose Warren and Colin Walker from relays, but Smith believes with Cody moving to 4A and Lovell graduating more than 70 points that the young Panthers have a shot at a team championship next year.
“I think the boys have a great chance with the amount of returning talent to make a serious run at a team championship and bring home a lot of gold medals,” Smith said.
