Another quick track meet at home yielded strong results for the Powell High School boys’ track and field team, as the Panthers battled against the Cody Broncs but fell short in a 262.5-214.5 scoreline.
The Panther boys did not add any new qualifiers, but had six individual event winners as Braxton Nelson was a two-event winner, taking the top spot in the high jump clearing 6 feet, 1 inch, and the triple jump with a leap of 44 feet, 5 1/2 inches. That leap put Nelson one-fourth of an inch off matching the current school record.
“Braxton missing a school record by one-fourth of an inch was frustrating for him a bit, but as a sophomore with quite a few meets left this year he will have plenty of chances,” coach Scott Smith said. “What I was most impressed with is that the wind was not a tail wind.”
Korbyn Warren won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 6.88 seconds, Sawyer Wormald won the 110 meter hurdles in 15.8 seconds, Landon McDonald won the pole vault clearing 9 feet and Brady Harvey won the discus with a throw of 130-9.
The 4x400 relay team of Brayden Benander, Tanner Seifert, David Stearns and Wormald took the top spot with a time of 3:41.13.
Additional top three finishes for the Panthers included Nelson who took second in the 100 meter dash (11.24); Sam Williams and Mason Cheatham tied for second in the pole vault (8-6); Harvey was second in the triple jump (40-11) and third in the shot put (41-8 1/2); Breckyn Kobbe took third in the 100 meters (11.68) and the 200 meters (24.98); Alex Werner placed third in the 400 meters (55.96); Michael Stensing placed third in the 800 meters (2:15.42) and Kaden Wolff was third in the discus (124-11).
The Panthers fell short against the rival Broncs in the team standings, as the visitors earned a 48-point win in the dual standings in the lone meet last week for the Panthers.
“A Saturday off is big for kids mentally, but the physical rest is very helpful for many of them as well,” Smith said.
Powell heads out on the road with plenty of meets this week, starting in Sheridan this afternoon (Tuesday) at 1 p.m. for the Gary Benson 3A/4A Clash.
That meet will feature both Casper schools, both Gillette schools and Sheridan for 4A competition as well as Buffalo, Cody, Worland and Powell for 3A schools.
Powell then has two more meets this week, weather permitting, with a tri at Cody on Friday afternoon and a meet in Cowley at Rocky Mountain High School on Saturday morning.
“We have a lot of young kids so we want them to learn how to compete. Our older kids, we want them to take advantage of the opportunities to PR to their best ability,” Smith said.
