A sanctuary in Powell is in great need.
The Moyer Animal Shelter, south of the tracks at 636 W. North Street, has lost its regular food donations. The shelter is at near maximum capacity with over 40 cats and 15-plus dogs.
The Powell Eagles FOE 2426 will hold a Paws & Pals Fundraiser to support the shelter — an event open to the public, featuring a carnita taco dinner on Saturday, April 11 (cocktails at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m.) Dinner is $15 and $10 for kids under 13. The evening will include a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.
The fundraiser will help support expenses for high quality food, extra medical care and spay/neuter services the shelter provides. This sanctuary is a no-kill shelter, started almost 30 years ago by Elfriede Milburn and supported by dedicated volunteers and community donations. No one receives a salary.
The City of Powell owns the shelter building, but the nonprofit Caring for Powell Animals provides the heart and extra resources. All animals stay at the shelter until adopted to a new home, because no animal has been put down for space or time. Athena, a sweet black mouth cur dog, has lived at the shelter for over two years, waiting to be adopted.
With high “pet-flation” (rising food costs), the shelter desperately needs the community’s help to provide food for the animals. The city budget covers the basic utilities and the building. The community provides the high quality food, extra medical care and spay/neuter costs.
For a successful Paws & Pals silent action, donations of items are needed — gift certificates, vouchers, gift baskets, craft items and items from local businesses, including home businesses. These donations can be dropped off at the Eagles Lodge, 131 N. Clark, Powell, up to the evening of the event.
In addition to financial donations, dry kibble and canned wet foods are a priority need. Other items needed are non-clumping or clay litter, new or gently used blankets, towels and sheets for bedding; liquid bleach, heavy-duty laundry detergent, paper towels and industrial strength trash bags. The volunteers would welcome well-maintained collars, sturdy leashes and animal crates.
Items for the shelter can be dropped off, throughout the year, at the shelter during the morning and late afternoon/evening.
