Park County Republican Women award four scholarships

Four local high school graduates recently received scholarships from the Park County Republican Women to put toward their college educations.

“We are so proud of them and feel very fortunate to have these outstanding young women representing our towns in Park County, Cody, Powell and Meeteetse,” the Park County Republican Women’s Scholarship Committee said in a statement.

The Republican women awarded their $1,000 scholarship to Cody High School graduate Teagan Thompson. She will be attending the University of Wyoming in Laramie this fall, majoring in chemical engineering/pre-med. The Park County Republican Women have funded the scholarship for the past 21 years.

Meanwhile, Mycah Wainscott, a member of the Powell High School Class of 2020, received the Republican women’s $500 scholarship. Wainscott will be attending Black Hills University in Spearfish, South Dakota, this fall, where she plans to major in elementary education and play golf. She also received $250 from a private donor for her teaching degree.

CHS graduate Emily Schmidtberger received the $1,000 Peg Coe Memorial Scholarship. She will be attending Northwest College this fall to begin working toward a registered nursing degree and/or bachelor’s degree in nursing.  The Peg Coe Memorial Scholarship is funded by the longtime community servant’s children: Ann (Coe) Hayes, state Sen. Hank Coe and Bob Coe.

Bryce Salzman, a 2020 graduate from Meeteetse High School, was awarded the Peg Shreve Memorial Scholarship, valued at $1,000. Salzman will be attending the University of Wyoming to pursue a bachelor’s degree in communication disorders, with a goal of continuing her education either through medical school to become a family practitioner or to seek a master’s degree in speech language hearing pathology. The Peg Shreve Memorial Scholarship is funded by the longtime Cody lawmaker’s children; Donna (Doug) Shirley, Jennifer (Dr. Zane) Nevins, Jay Shreve and Don (Sheri) Shreve.

Like many other traditional events for graduating seniors, the Park County Republican Women’s annual leadership tea was canceled, but the group still got the certificates and scholarships out to the recipients.

“These girls had exemplary applications with detailed views of family, moral issues, and patriotism for our American way of life,” the scholarship committee said in its statement, adding that the young women “included the importance as well as their interest in being involved at their colleges and communities in future years.”

The members of the scholarship committee — Jessalynne Crum, Jacque Stouffer, Mona Horman, Patra Lindenthal, Sarah Crum, Fran Swope and group President Barb Poley — offered congratulations and best wishes to Thompson, Wainscott, Schmidtberger and Salzman “for their future and the new adventures they will be experiencing.”
