Parent input sought as state seeks to improve internet access for students

The Wyoming State Broadband Program is working to identify ways to expand and improve access to high-speed internet (broadband) for every K-12 student across the state. As part of that process, the state is asking anyone with a K-12 student in their household to take the broadband speed test and Student Connectivity Survey.

“The Wyoming Business Council and our state leadership are committed to ensuring that every student in Wyoming has access to the resources needed for their education,” said Business Council CEO Josh Dorrell. “That means we need to assess the broadband landscape and ensure that every child has the technology he or she needs for both completing homework assignments and taking part in remote classroom learning when necessary. We are asking parents to provide input on what they need so we can identify those pain points and respond proactively.”

Wyoming Business Council Broadband Manager Ryan Kudera said the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted “how critical it is to make sure every student in Wyoming is connected to broadband.”

“Our students and teachers need this technology not only to respond to potential closures but to access a wealth of educational resources,” Kudera said. “We don’t want a single Wyoming child left out of academic opportunities simply because they don’t have access to high-speed internet. That is something we can work to fix.”

The Wyoming State Broadband Program is also collecting general speed test and broadband survey data from households and businesses. Parents and the general public are encouraged to take part in the test and survey as well. All of the surveys and more information can be found online at www.wyobbmap.org.
