Overturning their first deficit of the season, the Powell High School girls’ soccer team earned a weekend sweep on the road, as the Panthers opened the 3A West Conference schedule 2-0 defeating Lander 2-1 and Pinedale 13-0.

POWELL 2, LANDER 1

Taking on one of their more difficult opponents to date, the Panthers (5-0 overall, 2-0 3A West) took on the Tigers (4-2 overall, 0-2 3A West) on Friday.

Lander struck first, putting home a ball on a corner kick that bounced around in the box and wasn’t cleared as the Tigers snuck it past the Panthers to make it 1-0 with just under 19 minutes left in the first half.

That lead held until the halftime break, and the Panthers needed an answer in the second half.

“I felt that we extremely underperformed in the Lander game, especially in the first half,” coach Danny Agee said. “This gave Lander the chance to hurt us. I hope the ladies see how important it is to always show up from the first whistle. I also hope they were able to see what they can truly be capable of accomplishing as a team.”

Powell got on the board just over five minutes into the second half, as Ivy Agee took a long throw from Ava Brewer behind the Tiger defense and slotted it home to tie the match 1-1.

It only took 10 minutes for the Panthers to find themselves in front, as a free kick by Jesi Agee found its way to Ivy, who put it home for her second goal to make it 2-1 with 25 minutes left.

Powell was unable to add onto the lead but kept the Tigers out as the Panthers held on for the 2-1 win.

“I was very impressed that the ladies were able to battle back from being behind for the first time this season,” coach Agee said. “That shows great resilience and competitive drive.”

POWELL 13, PINEDALE 0

Heading into Saturday the Panthers had a much more comfortable contest against the Wranglers (0-2 overall, 0-2 3A West).

It didn’t take long for the Panthers to get a couple on the board, as Charlie Taylor turned home a corner kick a minute in and Aspen French quickly followed with a goal of her own just a minute later to make it 2-0.

Powell’s third came 5:26 into the game, as Jesi Agee fired home a shot and made it 3-0.

French got her second shortly after, and Powell led 4-0 inside nine minutes.

Ivy Agee got on the scoresheet with a volley into the top corner to make it five in 10 minutes.

Taylor got her second on another volley with 12 minutes remaining in the half, and Ava Gilliatt got on the board with five minutes remaining to make it 7-0.

Jesi Agee got her second with just minutes remaining in the half as the Panthers led 8-0 at the break.

“It was great to be able to play so many players on Saturday and cycle them through the formation,” coach Agee said. “I think it really helped players to see how they can connect with the group through their individual role.”

Taylor Tolman got the scoring going in the second half, finding the back of the net just over five minutes in to make it 9-0.

Taylor finished her hat-trick with a goal 11 minutes in, as the Panthers hit double-digits.

McKay Kilcrease added her name to the growing list of Panther scorers, as she made it 11-0 with 23 minutes remaining.

“It was pretty awesome watching McKay score and I believe there were several other ladies that scored their first goal in that game. That is always a huge accomplishment and confidence booster for them,” coach Agee said.

Mady Agee got a goal with 18 minutes remaining, and Fae McNair got the Panther’s final goal as they made it 13-0 with 15 minutes left as Powell finished the 13-0 win.

HOME CONTESTS

The Panthers return home this weekend for a pair of games, as they take on a pair of Bridger Valley schools on Friday and Saturday.

Powell starts with a game against Lyman (0-2 overall, 0-1 3A West) at 3 p.m. on Friday before taking on Mountain View (2-0 overall, 1-0 3A West) at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

“We are off to a good start but I really want to see more dynamic movement off the ball to make space to play into,” coach Agee said. “We have the ability to do this very well but it is very tiring work and can be tough to maintain for an entire game.”
