The Powell High School soccer teams split contests at home Tuesday night against the visiting Lander Tigers, as the Panther girls defeated the visitors 2-1 and the Panther boys fell 6-0.
The Panther girls (9-1 overall, 5-1 3A West) used first half goals from Emery Hernandez and Ivy Agee before withstanding a late charge from the Tigers (7-3 overall, 3-3 3A West) in the second half to secure the win.
That win earned the Panthers a season sweep of the Tigers and got them a two game lead in the race for a top two seed in the west at the state tournament.
Powell has not quite locked in a spot at the state tournament, but can have a spot secured by the end of this weekend.
The Panthers continue at home with a contest against Pinedale (0-5 overall, 0-5 3A West) at 10 a.m. on Saturday. A win in that game along with a loss by Lyman against Mountain View on Thursday will secure a spot at the state tournament.
Powell defeated Pinedale 13-0 on the road in April.
The Panther boys (3-6 overall, 2-4 3A West) fell behind five minutes into their contest, and Lander (8-2 overall, 5-1 3A West) rode that momentum to a 5-0 halftime lead before finishing with the 6-0 win in the second half.
Powell remains at home this weekend, welcoming in a key opponent in the race for the final spot in the 3A West, as the Panthers will take on the Pinedale Wranglers (0-5 overall, 0-5 3A West) at noon on Saturday.
The Panthers currently sit three points ahead of Lyman, and five points ahead of Pinedale, as the Wranglers earned a point earlier in the season after losing to Lander in a shootout.
Contests this weekend will be the Panthers’ second to last home games, before they head on the road next weekend to Lyman and Mountain View before ending the year at home against Cody.
