The Powell High School boys’ track and field team boasted a number of qualifiers and ran away with the team title in Worland, winning the D&D Invitational on Thursday by 49 points over second place.

Powell was led by Braxton Nelson, who added two new qualifying marks in the high jump clearing 6 feet, 4 inches, while also winning the triple jump with a qualifying mark of 44 feet.

“Braxton is very talented and has been working hard to get where he is at,” coach Scott Smith said. “Both high jump and triple jump marks are very close to school records.”

Korbyn Warren claimed victory and qualified in the 3200 meters with a time of 10 minutes, 26.16 seconds.

The 1600 sprint medley relay team of Breckyn Kobbe, Karcher Foley, Sawyer Wormald and Warren won and qualified with a time of 3:48.1, and a new 4x100 relay team of Lincoln Crawford, Tanner Seifert, Foley and Kobbe took second and qualified with a time of 45.28 seconds.

“Korbyn had a fantastic day which is great to see as a reward for all of his dedication and hard work,” Smith said.

Nelson added one more victory in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.34 seconds, and Wormald was the final victor in the 300 meter hurdles for a second straight week with a time of 41.68 seconds.

The 4x800 relay team of Alex Werner, Michael Stensing, Colin Walker and Warren claimed the top spot with a time of 8:56.74.

The Panther boys also had a number of second place finishes, as David Stearns took second in the 200 meters (24.32); Troy Cheatham was second in the pole vault (11); Cobey Khan was third in the 100 meters (11.74); Wormald was third in the 110 meter hurdles (16.26); Brady Harvey was third in the discus (127-5); Kobbe was fourth in the 100 meters (11.82); Nelson was fourth in the 200 meters (24.38); Walker was fourth in the 3200 meters (10:53.02); Tristin Winninger was fourth in the long jump (18-8 1/4); Brayden Benander took fifth in the 400 meters (53.6); Nathan Varian took fifth in the 1600 meters (5:17.28); Karson Howe placed fifth in the 3200 meters (12:23.53) and Crawford took fifth in the 110 meter hurdles (17.38).

As a team the Panthers claimed the top spot with a total of 165.75 points, 49 points ahead of Campbell County.

After taking the rest of the Easter weekend to rest the Panthers return to action this week, hosting the LA Kohnke Powell Invitational on Saturday.

Field events begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with the 1600 sprint medley relay at 9:15 a.m., the 4x800 relay at 9:30 a.m. before the rest of the track events begin at 11 a.m.

“We have a lot of kids that are getting pretty sore so a few days off to heal up is nicely timed,” Smith said. “Weather doesn’t look to be friendly so we will get some conditioning in when nice and try to work on some technique during the crummy days.”
