Though some of their top-tier performers didn’t make the trip to Basin Friday, as they headed to the Billings Invitational Saturday, Powell showed it had more than enough in winning both the boys and girls side of the Riverside Invitational.
The Lady Panthers totaled 104 points to stay ahead of second-place Greybull (79.5) and third-place Rocky Mountain (72.5) in the 10-team field.
For the boys, Powell came away with 105 points to outlast Riverside (81), Lovell (78.5) and six other teams.
The Panthers came away with five outright wins in the meet, with one tie for first, six second-place finishes and three thirds, with plenty more scoring places to carry the day.
Mason Olsen won the boys 400-meter dash with a time of 56.18 seconds and Rachelle Cole won the girls 800 in 2:53.62.
Freshman Kenyon Gann landed 38 feet, 1.5 inches from takeoff in the triple jump to claim first place while Maddy Hanks cleared an even 8 feet to win the girls pole vault.
Zach Easum won the boys discus by nearly 23 feet with a toss of 137 feet, 1-inch, with the next closest throw landing at 114 feet, 7 inches.
Freshman Kolter McLaughlin earned a rare tie for first in the 110-meter hurdles as he and Riverside senior Scott Anderson each hit the finish line in 18.81 seconds.
Three Powell relay teams took second-place finishes, in both the boys and girls 4x100 (Jacob Harrison, Jon Morrow, Kaelan Groves and Kanyon Gann; Karlie McKenzie, Kourtney Rowton, Rylee Ramsey and Mollie Kissner) and the boys 4x800 (Brandon Anderson, Jesse Erickson, Alan Merritt and Teagan Cordes).
Cole showed her strength in the middle distances as the junior took second place in the 400 with a time of 1:10.09 and freshman Merritt gave a good look at the future of Panther long distance as he finished the 1600 as runner up in 5:13.4.
Other underclassmen giving good visions for the future were sophomore McKenna Hanson who placed second in the triple jump (31 feet, 5.75 inches) and third in the long jump (14 feet, 6 inches) and freshman Rachel Bonander who took third in both the shot put (29 feet, 5.25 inches) and discus (88 feet, 1-inch).
Senior Anderson got third in the boys 800 and Ezra Andreasen was fourth in the 1600.
The Panthers filled out their point total with 24 more scoring finishes.
Kissner (girls 100-hurdles), Gabri Lundburg (girls triple jump), McLaughlin (boys high jump), Groves (boys pole vault) and Colby Calcotte (girls shot put) all came away with fourth-place finishes, while Joe Rogers (boys 400), Dagne Stratton (girls 1600), Emily Sweet (girls 100-hurdles), Calcotte (girls discus) and Mason Olsen (boys discus) all brought home fifths.
Shay Dillon took sixth in the boys discus, while Zach Easum was seventh in the boys 100-meter dash and Shaylee Tharp was seventh in the girls 400.
Colby Warner would also get two points for finishing seventh in the boys triple jump, Rowton repeated the points and placement on the girls side of the event and Warner was seventh in the boys high jump as well.
Jacob Harrison and Brooks Asher tied each other for seventh in the boys pole vault and Haylee Ugalde took sixth in the girls discus and seventh in the shot put.
Asher would also place eighth in the boys 400, with other eighth-place finishes, for one point each, coming from Cesar Corro (boys 1600), Tharp (girls long jump) and Dalton Woodward (boys triple jump).
Powell will return to track and field competition, at full strength, hosting a relay meet Thursday with Cody, Lovell and Worland and Saturday when the team heads to Lovell for a 9:30 a.m start.
