Boys basketball, wrestling still the teams to chase in 3A
The Powell High School boys basketball team consolidated its hold on the No. 1 spot in the latest Wyopreps coaches’ and media boys basketball poll. For the first time in their three-week run atop the poll, the Panthers were identified as a top 5 team on all ballots.
The Panthers, who scored a 40-point victory over Worland in their only action of the past week, received 20 of a possible 23 first-place votes. Powell was ranked among the top three teams on all ballots submitted.
The only three voters standing between Powell and a unanimous No. 1 selection had the team ranked second, third and third. Star Valley, Lander and Wheatland each received one first-place vote in the poll. The Panthers’ lead over No. 2 Star Valley sits at more than 100 points this week.
The Braves are 39 points in front of Torrington, which bumped from No. 4 to No. 3 this week. Sliding down into that No. 4 position is Lander, which will host Powell on Friday in a battle that will almost certainly impact next week’s balloting. Wheatland rounds out the poll for another week, ranking at No. 5.
Rawlins, Douglas, Buffalo, Lyman and Cody each received votes in this week’s poll.
The latest girls’ basketball poll was scheduled to be released Thursday (today). The Panthers did not receive a vote in last week’s poll.
Wrestlers also leading in 3A
On the mats, the Powell High School wrestling team solidified its place atop the 3A field following an 8-0 sweep of dual action last week. The top of the poll has a familiar look to it as the Panthers are closely chased by Douglas and Worland. Star Valley, Lander and Mountain View complete the latest hierarchy offered by Wyowrestling.com.
Waylon Bays (145) and Olie Olson (170) are the only Panther wrestlers to be ranked atop their respective weight divisions. A host of Panthers can be found in the top seven of the individual weight class standings, however.
Individual rankings: Charles Wittick (second at 106), Colbee Craig (fourth at 113), Colton Parham (fifth at 113), Dylan Rood (second at 120), Andrew Feller (second at 126), Zach Thiel (fifth at 132), Randy Andrews (second at 160), Tyler Patterson (fourth at 170) and Kurt Bullinger (third at 220).
