Powell gets 17 of 21 first place votes
After a decisive victory over in-county rival Cody, the Powell Panthers picked up 17 out of a possible 21 No. 1 votes in the latest Wyopreps coaches’ and media boys’ basketball poll. This marks Powell’s second consecutive week at No. 1 in Class 3A.
The Panthers, currently 9-1 this season, were named on 20 of the 21 ballots turned in this week. Of the three ballots that listed Powell somewhere other than No. 1, the Panthers were ranked in second place on one and in third place on the other two.
Powell holds a 90 point lead in the balloting over new No. 2 Star Valley, which received one first-place vote. The Braves grabbed a slim six-point lead over No. 3 Lander, which pulled in two first-place votes. The two schools flipped positions in this week’s poll.
Holding steady at No. 4 for another week is Torrington. Returning to the rankings this week, and receiving the state’s remaining first-place vote, is Wheatland. The Bulldogs replaced Buffalo in the 3A hierarchy.
In addition to the five ranked teams, six others received votes. Rawlins, with one third-place and two fifth-place votes, was the most popular unranked team. Buffalo also garnered multiple mentions. Jackson, Lyman, Glenrock and Worland were each named on one ballot.
The girls’ rankings were not scheduled to be released until today (Thursday). The Panthers did not receive votes in the previous top 5 balloting.
